Yamaha’s long-anticipated big bike launches in India have faced delays, but the company confirms its plans are still on track to bring premium models to the market.

Why the Delay? It’s About E20 Compliance

For a couple of years now, enthusiasts have eagerly awaited Yamaha’s larger displacement motorcycles in India. The good news is, these plans haven’t been scrapped, according to Itaru Otani, Yamaha India’s new MD and Chairman.

The main reason for the hold-up is the upcoming E20 regulations in India. By October 2025, all bikes sold here must be compliant with E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol.

Currently, Yamaha’s international big bike lineup isn’t universally E20 compliant, as these regulations aren’t widespread globally. This means the bikes need specific modifications to meet India’s new fuel standards.

Yamaha assures us they have the necessary technology in place. It’s just a matter of integrating it and getting the bikes ready for the Indian market. The company also confirmed that the homologation process is already underway, hinting that the launch might not be too far off.

What Big Bikes Can We Expect?

While an exact list hasn’t been revealed, Yamaha’s big bike strategy for India will focus on its popular 07 and 09 families. This means models like the sporty Yamaha R7 and the versatile MT-07 are strong contenders.

For those seeking more power, the potent MT-09 and the exciting new Yamaha R9 are also on the cards. These motorcycles are expected to be imported as Completely Built Units (CBUs).

However, adventure tourer fans might be disappointed. The Yamaha Tenere 700’s launch in India seems unlikely. Yamaha has previously expressed concerns about its seat height being less suitable for the Indian demographic.

Engine Powerhouses

The Yamaha R7 and MT-07 are powered by the company’s well-regarded 689cc parallel-twin engine, known for its strong torque delivery and engaging performance.

Meanwhile, the MT-09 and the new R9 boast an 890cc three-cylinder engine. This powerplant churns out an impressive 119hp, promising exhilarating rides for performance enthusiasts.

Looking Ahead

With the homologation process in full swing and E20 compliance being addressed, Yamaha fans can look forward to these highly anticipated big bikes hitting Indian roads soon. The wait has been long, but it seems there’s light at the end of the tunnel for performance motorcycle enthusiasts.

  • Yamaha’s big bike launch plans for India are confirmed, despite delays.
  • Delays are due to the upcoming E20 fuel compliance regulations in India.
  • Expected models include the MT-07, R7, MT-09, and the new R9.
  • The Tenere 700 is unlikely to launch due to seat height concerns.
  • All planned bikes will be brought in as CBU imports.
