Volvo’s new compact electric SUV, the EX30, is set to make its debut in India this month, aiming to be the brand’s most affordable EV yet.
A Fresh Face in the EV Market
The Volvo EX30 brings a modern, futuristic design that aligns with Volvo’s latest styling language. Its distinctive blanked-off grille and slim LED headlamps immediately catch the eye.
You’ll also notice the signature Thor’s Hammer DRLs and unique pixel-style tail lights, giving it a sleek appearance. The aero-optimised wheels are specifically designed for electric vehicles, enhancing efficiency.
While compact enough to navigate city streets with ease, the EX30’s design ensures a comfortable experience for longer journeys. Its charging port is conveniently located on the rear left quarter panel.
Stepping Inside: Minimalist and Tech-Packed
The interior of the EX30 embraces a minimalist Swedish design philosophy. The central focus is a large 12.3-inch portrait-style infotainment screen, powered by a Google-based operating system.
This system fully supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, keeping you connected on the go. Drivers will appreciate the sleek digital instrumentation and a newly designed steering wheel, mirroring the clean layout seen in other modern Volvo EVs like the EX90.
Safety remains a top priority for Volvo, and the EX30 is no exception. It comes loaded with advanced features, including a 360-degree camera for easy parking and maneuvering. Multiple airbags provide passive safety, while active ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist Systems) like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control add an extra layer of confidence to your drive.
Power and Performance
Underpinning the EX30 is Geely’s SEA platform, a dedicated electric vehicle architecture. Volvo offers two battery options to suit different needs: a 51kWh pack and a larger 69kWh pack.
These batteries deliver impressive ranges, with the 51kWh version achieving approximately 344 km (WLTP cycle) and the 69kWh variant extending that to around 480 km (WLTP cycle).
For performance, the single-motor setup provides a robust 268 bhp and 343 Nm of torque. If you’re looking for even more power, the dual-motor version significantly boosts output to 422 bhp and 543 Nm of torque, offering quicker acceleration.
India Launch and Market Position
The Volvo EX30 first premiered globally in June 2023, and its arrival in India marks a strategic move for the brand. It is positioned as an entry-level EV, slotting below the EX40 and EC40 Recharge in Volvo’s electric vehicle portfolio.
This placement means the EX30 will be Volvo’s most accessible electric vehicle in the Indian market. Initially, it is expected to be imported as a CBU (Completely Built Unit).
However, Volvo is likely to transition to a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route later, with local assembly. This move could significantly lower the price point, making the EX30 even more competitive and appealing to a wider audience in India’s growing EV segment.
