Vietnamese EV maker Vinfast is making a significant splash in India with a new manufacturing plant and plans to launch two electric SUVs soon.

Vinfast’s Ambitious India Drive

Vinfast is gearing up for a major entry into the Indian market, solidifying its commitment with a substantial investment. In February 2024, the company broke ground on its first manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, India.

This plant, located in Thoothukudi, represents a US$500 million (over Rs 4,000 crore) investment over five years. It boasts an annual production capacity of 1.5 lakh units, promising to create numerous employment opportunities.

Production is set to begin soon, with the goal of delivering vehicles to customers by the upcoming festive season. To build excitement, Vinfast has already showcased its VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs in malls across 11 Indian states and cities, allowing potential buyers to get a sneak peek.

The company is also busy establishing a robust dealership network and partnering with local firms like Global Assure to ensure strong customer service and after-sales support.

From Conglomerate to EV Powerhouse

Vinfast is a relatively new name in the global automotive scene, but it has strong roots. It emerged in 2017 as part of Vingroup, a vast Vietnamese conglomerate with diverse interests from hospitality to healthcare.

Initially, Vinfast produced internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, collaborating with European design houses and acquiring technology licenses. They even debuted models like the Lux A2.0 sedan at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

A significant shift occurred in 2021 when Vinfast announced its strategic pivot to become an all-electric vehicle company. This move aligned with global emission reduction goals and allowed Vinfast, as a newer player, to build EV-specific infrastructure from the ground up. By 2023, Vinfast had globally launched three new electric cars: the VF 5, VF 6, and VF 9.

Introducing India’s First Vinfast EVs

Vinfast showcased its extensive EV lineup, including cars, scooters, and concepts, at the Bharat Mobility Expo earlier this year. For the Indian market, the initial focus will be on two popular electric SUVs: the VF 6 and VF 7.

The Vinfast VF 6 will serve as the brand’s entry-level offering. This five-seater SUV features distinctive V-shaped LED DRLs that seamlessly integrate with the Vinfast logo, creating a unique ‘V’ pattern at both the front and rear. Globally, the VF 6 comes in Eco and Plus variants, both powered by a 59.6kWh battery pack.

Positioned above the VF 6, the Vinfast VF 7 is another five-seater all-electric SUV joining the initial lineup. The VF 7 will feature a larger 70.8 kWh battery pack, offering more power and dimensions. It is expected to come packed with technology and comfort features, including Level 2 ADAS, a 12.9-inch central touchscreen, a coloured Head-Up Display (HUD), dual-zone automatic climate control, rear AC vents, a panoramic fixed glass roof, and premium vegan leather upholstery.
