US President Donald Trump has announced a new 50% tariff on various semi-finished and derivative copper products, set to take effect from August 1. This move follows similar steep tariffs previously imposed on steel and aluminum imports.

The Latest Tariff Unpacked

From August 1, a significant 50% duty will apply to a range of copper products entering the US. This includes items like tubes, pipes, wires, rods, and sheets made of copper. The White House clarified that this specific tariff is separate from any existing reciprocal duties.

It’s important to note what this new tariff does not cover. Raw copper materials such as ores, concentrates, and cathodes are exempt. These input materials also remain free from reciprocal tariffs, ensuring they can still be imported without the new duties.

Why the US is Acting

This new tariff stems from an investigation into copper imports, which President Trump initiated in February on national security grounds. The US Department of Commerce concluded that “foreign competitors’ predatory practices and excessive environmental regulations” have significantly harmed the American copper industry.

Copper is considered a critical mineral for US national and economic security. It’s a vital component in many defense systems, including aircraft, ground vehicles, ships, missiles, and ammunition. In fact, it’s the second-most used material by the Department of Defense, playing a crucial role across the broader US industrial base.

The administration also aims to boost domestic copper availability. They plan to achieve this by curbing exports of raw materials and high-quality scrap, implementing domestic-use rules.

India’s Stake in the Copper Trade

This tariff is particularly significant for India, a key global exporter of copper. In 2024-25, India’s total copper and copper product exports worldwide reached $2 billion. A substantial $360 million of that, or 17%, went to the US.

The US is India’s third-largest market for copper exports, following Saudi Arabia (26%) and China (18%). Specific Indian copper products sent to the US include other copper articles, tubes and pipes, plates and sheets, and bars.

However, given copper’s essential role in India’s own infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing sectors, the domestic industry might be able to absorb any decline in US demand resulting from these new tariffs.

  • A 50% tariff on semi-finished copper products takes effect August 1.
  • The US cites national security and protection of its domestic copper industry as reasons.
  • India, a major copper exporter, is significantly impacted by these new duties.
  • This follows similar tariffs previously imposed on steel and aluminum by the Trump administration.

This latest move highlights the Trump administration’s ongoing strategy of using tariffs to protect what it deems vital domestic industries. It remains to be seen how global copper markets and trade relations will adapt to these new duties.
