A Tearful Encounter on the Tracks
Shatrughan Sinha recently shared the heartwarming, yet unusual, tale of how he first met his wife, Poonam Sinha. It was on a train journey from Patna to Pune, as he headed to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
He recounted seeing a girl, more beautiful than anyone he had ever seen before. Coincidentally, both Shatrughan and Poonam were crying during that journey, though for different reasons.
Shatrughan was emotional about leaving home for the first time, never having lived away from Bihar or in a hostel. Poonam, still a young schoolgirl, was crying after being scolded by her mother.
Sinha also recalled protecting Poonam from the teasing of his accompanying friends. He intervened, pointing out that he would be alone in Pune and vulnerable if her family retaliated for their actions. This early act of chivalry set the stage for their bond.
From Shared Sorrow to Enduring Love
That shared moment of vulnerability, both crying on the train, forged an instant connection between them. Shatrughan humorously notes that some things never change, joking that even after 45 years of marriage, they both still find reasons to cry, though likely from laughter and joy now.
Their journey together led to a marriage spanning over four decades, blessed with three children: Luv, Kush, and the renowned actress Sonakshi Sinha. Their enduring relationship is a testament to the unique foundation laid on that train.
Overcoming Family Hurdles: “She is Miss India!”
Despite their strong connection, their path to marriage was far from smooth. Poonam’s family initially had significant reservations, particularly her mother, who was quite vocal about her disapproval of Shatrughan.
Shatrughan revealed that his elder brother, Ram Sinha, a scientist in the US, was the one who first proposed their union to Poonam’s family. However, Poonam’s mother outright rejected the proposal, making a cutting remark about Shatrughan’s appearance.
She famously called him “kaliya” (dark-skinned) and remarked, “He looks like a fool as well as a street rowdy at the same time. Look at my daughter… she looks like she bathes in milk. Poonam Chandiramani is Miss India!” She even quipped that a color photograph of them together would still look black and white.
It took many years and persistent efforts for Poonam’s family to finally give their consent. Fortunately, love triumphed over initial objections, allowing the couple to build their life together.
