The Mahindra Thar Roxx, the five-door version of the popular SUV, has dramatically outpaced its three-door counterpart, now dominating sales for the Thar brand.

Thar Roxx Doubles Up on Sales

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (April-June 2025), the Mahindra Thar Roxx proved its market might. Mahindra dispatched an impressive 20,726 units of the five-door SUV. In contrast, the traditional three-door Thar sold 9,908 units during the same period.

This surge means the Thar Roxx now accounts for a significant 68 percent of all Thar brand sales. This is a considerable jump from the second half of FY2025, when the five-door model held a 45 percent share, indicating a clear shift in consumer preference.

The Appeal of Practicality

The original second-generation Thar launched in October 2020 and quickly became a hit. However, the introduction of the five-door Thar Roxx in August 2024 (with 4×4 prices following in September) offered a more practical option for many buyers.

Its larger size and increased accessibility are proving to be major drawcards. This is reflected in the sales figures: the three-door Thar’s sales dipped by 43 percent year-on-year in Q1 FY2026 compared to the previous year’s 17,286 units.

Mahindra had anticipated this demand shift. As early as February, the company proactively adjusted its production strategy, instituting a 70:30 split in favor of the more spacious five-door Thar Roxx.

Thar Brand Climbs the Ranks

The robust performance of the Thar Roxx has significantly boosted the overall Thar brand’s standing within Mahindra’s impressive SUV portfolio. In Q1 FY2026, the combined sales of the Thar Roxx and the three-door Thar reached 30,634 units.

This strong showing propelled the Thar brand to become Mahindra’s second-best-selling SUV line-up for the quarter. It trails only the popular Scorpio N/Classic duo, which recorded 42,675 units.

The Thar brand’s growing influence is also evident in its increased share of Mahindra’s total SUV sales. In Q1 FY2026, the two Thar models contributed 20 percent of the 1,52,057 Mahindra SUVs sold, up from 14 percent in Q1 FY2025.

Mahindra’s Strong SUV Lineup

Beyond the Thar, Mahindra continues to perform strongly across its SUV range. The Bolero (24,800 units), XUV 3XO (22,609 units), and XUV700 (19,444 units) also contributed significantly to the company’s Q1 FY2026 sales. Even Mahindra’s new electric SUVs, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, are making their presence felt.

  • The Mahindra Thar Roxx now commands 68 percent of total Thar brand sales.
  • Sales of the three-door Thar declined by 43 percent in Q1 FY2026.
  • The combined Thar brand is Mahindra’s second-best-selling SUV line in Q1 FY2026.

The shifting dynamics highlight consumers’ preference for practicality and space in the popular SUV segment, a trend Mahindra has successfully capitalized on with the Thar Roxx.
