Shubman Gill has wrapped up a spectacular Test series, finishing with 754 runs, just 20 runs shy of Sunil Gavaskar’s iconic record for the highest tally by an Indian in a single series.
A Series for the History Books
Despite a modest final Test, Shubman Gill’s performance throughout the series has been nothing short of extraordinary. His total of 754 runs marks the second-highest tally ever by an Indian batter in a single Test series.
This places him only behind the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 774 runs against the formidable West Indies in a five-Test series back in 1971. Remarkably, Gavaskar achieved his feat playing just four matches, having debuted in the second Test.
Joining Elite Company
Gill now joins an exclusive club of Indian batters who have amassed over 700 runs in a single Test series. Besides Gavaskar, the only other Indian to achieve this milestone is his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 712 runs in a home series against England in 2023/24.
This series also marked Gill’s debut as India’s Test captain, adding another layer to his incredible achievement. He has truly led from the front with the bat.
Captaincy Records Shattered
Shubman Gill’s 754 runs also stand as the second-highest tally for any captain in a Test series globally. Only the iconic Don Bradman holds a higher record with 810 runs, scored against England in the 1936/37 Ashes.
For an Indian captain, Gill’s performance is unprecedented. He has surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s previous record of 732 runs, scored in a six-Test series against the West Indies in 1978/79, by a margin of 22 runs.
Highs and Lows of the Series
Gill started his captaincy debut in spectacular fashion, hitting a century in his very first innings. He scored 147, followed by 8 runs in the second innings of that match.
The second Test saw him reach new heights with a massive 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, propelling India to a significant victory. However, not every match was a century-fest; he failed to reach triple figures in both London Tests, at Lord’s and The Oval.
A crucial moment came in the fourth Test when Gill ground out 103 runs off 238 balls. This match-saving effort, alongside KL Rahul, helped India secure a draw after batting out nearly 70 overs.
