Indian athlete Tejaswin Shankar has once again shattered his own national record in the Decathlon, achieving a remarkable 7826 points and taking the Asian lead for the 2025 season.

Shankar Sets New National Benchmark

The Asian Games silver medalist showcased an outstanding performance at the 4th Wieslawa Czapiewskiego Memorial in Poland. This gold-level World Athletics event saw Shankar accumulate 7826 points over two days and ten events.

This new personal best surpasses his previous national record of 7666 points, which he set during his silver-medal winning effort at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. Formerly a high jumper, Shankar has successfully transitioned into a formidable decathlete, competing against a strong field that included several European Indoor medallists.

Dominating Day One

Shankar kicked off the competition strong, setting a personal best in the very first event. He clocked 11.02 seconds in the 100m, earning 856 points.

He followed this with a season-best long jump of 7.57 meters, adding another 952 points. Despite a weaker performance in the Shot Put (12.62m), he bounced back impressively with a 2.18m high jump, securing 973 points.

Closing out day one, Shankar recorded a season-best 48.87 seconds in the 400m. By the end of the first five events, he was leading the pack with a total of 4292 points.

Pushing Through on Day Two

Day two began with Shankar running the 110m hurdles in 14.63 seconds, earning 895 points. He then achieved a season-best throw of 38.28 meters in the Discus Throw, although other competitors surged ahead.

In the Pole Vault, an event where Shankar typically faces challenges, he equaled his personal best of 4.10 meters. Despite this, fierce competition pushed him to sixth place overall with 6462 points.

With just two events remaining, Shankar needed 1,204 points to break the national record. He delivered a crucial 52.89m throw in the Javelin, earning 631 points and significantly boosting his chances.

Record-Breaking Finish

The final event, the 1500m, saw Shankar dig deep and record another personal best. He completed the race in 4:31.80, shaving off two seconds from his previous best and earning 733 points.

This stellar finish not only secured a new personal best but also improved his previous national record by an impressive 160 points.

Asian Lead Secured

This remarkable performance marks Shankar’s second international decathlon competition of the season, following his silver medal win at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, Korea, where he scored 7618 points. He began his season with 7603 points at the Federation Cup in Kochi.

With his new national record, Tejaswin Shankar has now officially taken the Asian lead for the 2025 season, surpassing Jiawei Wang of China’s 7639 points.

  • Tejaswin Shankar broke his own national Decathlon record with 7826 points.
  • His previous record was 7666 points, set at the 2022 Asian Games.
  • He secured the Asian lead for the 2025 season with this performance.

Shankar’s consistent improvement and record-breaking efforts highlight his growing prowess in the demanding decathlon event, positioning him as a strong contender on the international stage.
