Renault has officially unveiled the Boreal, a new SUV set to strengthen its presence in international markets, with an India launch expected in 2026.

Global Strategy and Foundation

Renault is actively working to boost its position in non-European markets, targeting 70 countries globally. The Boreal SUV is a key part of this strategy, designed with diverse powertrain options in mind.

This new SUV is built on an incredibly flexible modular platform, which Renault states can support various powertrains and different body styles. Importantly, the Boreal shares its foundation with the Dacia Bigster, indicating a robust and adaptable design.

Striking Design and Dimensions

The Renault Boreal is a substantial vehicle, measuring 4.6 meters long, 1.9 meters wide, and 1.6 meters tall. It boasts a wheelbase of 2.7 meters, which is comparable to many SUVs in its segment.

Visually, the Boreal features a horizontal bonnet and a body-colored grille proudly displaying the new ‘Novel “R”’ logo. It also comes with modern lights incorporating additional LED modules, plastic protectors over the wheel arches, and stylish 19-inch alloy wheels. Other notable exterior elements include a dual-tone roof, an aluminum skid plate, a panoramic sunroof, and practical roof rails. While the global model has been shown, the exact seating configuration for the India-spec version is yet to be confirmed.

Inside the Cabin: Tech and Comfort

Step inside, and you’re greeted by a curved display featuring two 10-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The cabin boasts soft-touch upholstery and 48-color ambient lighting for a premium feel.

Comfort is a priority with front seats offering memory and massage functions. Convenience features include a refrigerated center console, two USB-C ports, and a generous 586-liter boot, expandable to 1,770 liters by folding the 60:40 split second-row seats. The instrument cluster also supports over-the-air (OTA) updates, connected car technology, and app-based diagnostics. For audiophiles, a Harman Kardon x Jean-Michel Jarre audio system promises an immersive sound experience.

Advanced Safety Features

Safety in the Boreal SUV is significantly enhanced by a Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) suite. This comprehensive system includes 24 features designed to assist the driver and prevent accidents.

Key safety features comprise Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Emergency Lane Keep Assist (e-LKA), Blind Spot Warning, Occupant Safe Exit Alert, and Reverse Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). Other crucial inclusions are Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning (DDAW), adaptive cruise control, hands-free parking, a 360-degree camera, and ultrasonic rear parking sensors.

Powertrain Options and India Launch

Internationally, the Renault Boreal is equipped with a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Depending on the region, this engine can deliver up to 158bhp and 270Nm of torque, paired with a DCT system. This setup allows the SUV to sprint from zero to 100kmph in just 9.2 seconds. Drivers can also choose from five driving modes: Smart, Eco, Comfort, Sport, and MySense.

For the Indian market, the Boreal is anticipated to arrive in 2026. Renault is expected to offer a diversified powertrain lineup, likely including a 1.2-liter mild-hybrid option, possibly carried over from the second-generation Duster. This launch is part of Renault’s broader strategy for India, which also includes the facelifted Triber, set to debut on July 23.

  • The Renault Boreal is based on the Dacia Bigster platform.
  • Its tentative launch in India is scheduled for 2026.
  • An India-specific hybrid powertrain is highly probable.

The Boreal aims to be a strong contender in the competitive SUV segment, combining modern design, advanced features, and a focus on both comfort and safety.
