Veteran actor Kabir Bedi recently opened up about his relationship with the late Parveen Babi, revealing her desire to leave Bollywood, her struggles with mental health, and her insecurity about his international fame.

A Challenging Love Story Unfolds

Kabir Bedi shared insights into his time with Parveen Babi, noting their relationship began after he separated from his first wife, Protima Gauri, and Parveen’s own relationship with Danny Denzongpa ended. It was during this period that Kabir first became aware of Parveen’s mental health struggles.

He explained that despite his efforts to help her, Parveen consistently refused treatment. Her biggest fear was that if the industry discovered her mental instability, her career would be over.

A Bid for a New Beginning Overseas

When Kabir relocated to London for his flourishing international career, Parveen accompanied him. His hope was for them to start a new life together there, and he wanted her to get the necessary medical treatment abroad.

However, Parveen was hesitant, fearing any doctor would expose her condition. Kabir revealed their plan involved her leaving the Hindi film industry entirely to live with him overseas. Yet, the pressure he put on her to seek treatment became a point of contention.

Ultimately, Parveen decided to return to India, especially after her film “Amar Akbar Anthony” became a massive hit, reigniting her career in Bollywood.

Insecurity Amidst International Stardom

A surprising revelation from Kabir was Parveen’s insecurity regarding his overseas stardom. While she was a mega-star in India, Kabir had become a household name in Europe, particularly after his role as Sandokan.

He noted that in Europe, Parveen didn’t receive the same level of respect and recognition she was accustomed to in India, which deeply affected her.

The Incident with Gina Lollobrigida

Kabir recounted a specific incident that highlighted Parveen’s discomfort. Italian actor Gina Lollobrigida invited them for dinner, but during the party, Gina primarily engaged with Kabir, largely ignoring Parveen.

Later, during a private dinner, Gina asked Kabir to dance, further sidelining Parveen. While Kabir enjoyed the moment, he sensed Parveen’s growing upset. The situation escalated when Gina reportedly insulted Parveen, asking, “What are you doing here? Following the star?”

Parveen quickly retorted, “No my dear. I am here with my man because I have a man.” Following this, Parveen danced with Kabir and then insisted on leaving the party immediately. Kabir, unwilling to let her go alone, chose to leave with her, prioritizing her feelings over remaining at the event hosted by Gina.

  • Parveen Babi struggled with mental health issues, refusing treatment due to fear of career backlash.
  • She considered leaving Bollywood to live abroad with Kabir Bedi but was hesitant about seeking treatment there.
  • Parveen felt insecure about Kabir Bedi’s international fame as she didn’t receive the same respect overseas as in India.
  • Kabir Bedi stood by Parveen, even when she felt disrespected by others in social settings.

Parveen Babi’s life ended tragically in 2005 at the age of 50, her struggles highlighting the immense pressures faced by public figures.
