Former Inter Milan coach Andrea Stramaccioni recently displayed incredible bravery, rescuing two teenage girls from drowning during his family vacation in Puglia, Italy.
A Holiday Turns Heroic
Andrea Stramaccioni, known for his time managing football clubs like Inter Milan, was enjoying a family vacation in Puglia’s Bay of Sfinale. His peaceful holiday took a dramatic turn when he noticed a lifeguard urgently signaling for help.
The lifeguard was whistling and trying to attract attention, indicating trouble in the water. Stramaccioni quickly spotted two girls waving and screaming, realizing they were in grave danger.
Answering the Call
Without hesitation, Stramaccioni sprinted towards the water. He understood the lifeguard couldn’t handle the situation alone. The girls were caught in a treacherous area where the beach met rocky points, making the waves particularly strong.
Despite his modesty, insisting he’s “not a hero,” Stramaccioni felt a strong compulsion to act. He recognized his physical and mental capacity to intervene and plunged into the sea.
Battling the Waves
Upon reaching the girls, the lifeguard directed him towards the older one, aged 19. She was terrified by the deep water and strong currents. Stramaccioni calmly reassured her, guiding her to stay on her back and promising her safety within minutes.
After bringing the first girl closer to shore, he turned to find the lifeguard struggling with the younger girl, aged 17. Her situation was critical; she was repeatedly going under and had swallowed a lot of water.
A Desperate Rescue
The rescue boat couldn’t reach them due to their proximity to the rocks. People on shore threw ropes, but they were out of reach. Stramaccioni admitted he started to feel scared, especially as the struggling girl was inadvertently pulling him down. She was convinced she was going to die.
He had to convince her to trust him. Seeing only one possible escape route through a small cove between the rocks, Stramaccioni grabbed her and literally “threw” her into the opening, going underwater himself in the process.
Safety and Reflection
Upon resurfacing, disoriented and hitting the rocks, he managed to grab a thrown rope and pull himself back up. It was then he discovered the girl was safe in the cove, a wave of relief washing over him.
Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Stramaccioni emphasized that he acted out of a sense of protection, as if his own family were in danger. He warned others about the area’s hazards, urging everyone to be cautious and responsible.
