Maruti Suzuki is set to unveil an all-new midsize SUV on September 3, poised to challenge popular models like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Get Ready for Maruti’s New SUV

The highly anticipated midsize SUV from Maruti Suzuki is scheduled for its grand launch on September 3. While the official name is yet to be confirmed, sources suggest it will likely be called the “Maruti Escudo” upon its debut.

This new offering will be retailed exclusively through Maruti’s Arena dealership channel. Its strategic positioning aims to directly rival established players in the competitive midsize SUV segment, specifically the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Positioning in Maruti’s Lineup

Internally codenamed Y17, this new SUV is designed to slot neatly into Maruti’s existing SUV portfolio. It will be positioned above the popular Brezza but just below the premium Grand Vitara.

For Arena dealers, this SUV is a significant addition, serving as their flagship product. The focus for this Arena-exclusive model is expected to be on delivering exceptional value for money, a key differentiator in its segment.

Engine and Powertrain Details

While specific powertrain details are still under wraps, the new Maruti midsize SUV is expected to borrow engines from its sibling, the Grand Vitara. This likely means a range of versatile options for buyers.

Anticipate a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering around 103hp, along with an 88hp CNG variant for fuel efficiency. A more powerful 116hp petrol-hybrid option is also highly probable, offering a blend of performance and economy. Both manual and automatic gearbox options are expected to be available.

A Potential Toyota Collaboration

The new SUV isn’t just for the Indian market; Maruti plans to export it to various overseas destinations. Adding to the excitement, there are strong indications of a Toyota derivative also being in the works.

This Toyota version is expected to launch slightly later and will be positioned above the Toyota Taisor in India, further expanding the collaboration between the two automotive giants.

The Escudo Legacy

The “Escudo” nameplate isn’t new to Suzuki. Maruti Suzuki had already trademarked the name in India last year, hinting at its potential use for an upcoming model. Interestingly, Suzuki uses the Escudo name for its Vitara SUV in Japan.

If the name is indeed adopted for the Indian market, this new Escudo will be one of two significant SUV launches from Maruti in 2025. The other major reveal expected is the all-electric e Vitara, signalling Maruti’s strong push into the SUV and EV segments.

  • Maruti’s new midsize SUV launches September 3, likely named Escudo.
  • It will be sold through Arena dealerships, targeting the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
  • Expected powertrain options include petrol, CNG, and a petrol-hybrid.
  • A Toyota derivative of the SUV is also anticipated.
  • The Escudo name has historical significance for Suzuki globally.

This upcoming SUV marks a crucial step for Maruti Suzuki, reinforcing its presence in the highly competitive Indian SUV market with a product designed for value and versatility.
