Javelin star Neeraj Chopra is working to perfect significant technique changes, admitting he’s still blending old habits with new instructions from his coach, Jan Zelezny.

Mastering New Techniques for Greater Throws

Neeraj Chopra, the current world champion, is focused on refining his javelin technique. Under the guidance of his coach, Jan Zelezny, he’s aiming to eliminate a tendency to lean left at the point of release.

This adjustment is crucial for transferring his full power into the javelin. He’s also working on a smoother transition from his running phase to the cross-step, ensuring a single, fluid motion.

However, replicating these changes consistently in competition is proving to be a challenge. Neeraj admits he’s currently using a mix of both old and new techniques during his throws.

He believes that once he can fully apply the techniques honed in training during competitions, he will achieve significantly better results.

Coach Zelezny’s Guiding Hand

The legendary javelin thrower Jan Zelezny joined Neeraj’s coaching team at the start of the season. Neeraj describes his coach as “very patient,” offering encouragement whether his performance is stellar or not.

Zelezny’s calm demeanor helps Neeraj stay focused. The primary goal for this year remains the Tokyo World Championships, where Neeraj hopes to showcase his improved technique.

Tackling Persistent Groin Issues

A recurring groin strain has been a concern for Neeraj in previous seasons. This year, however, he reports being pain-free, crediting specific exercises recommended by a doctor in Prague.

Interestingly, this doctor had also treated Coach Zelezny. Additionally, a new technical adjustment – taking shorter cross-steps – has helped reduce stress on his groin, contributing to his injury-free season.

The Inaugural NC Classic: A Home Run

Neeraj recently hosted and won the first-ever NC Classic in Bengaluru, an event named after him. He expressed initial nervousness about its success but was overwhelmed by the turnout.

Nearly 15,000 fans filled the stadium, creating an electrifying atmosphere. Neeraj felt like he had “invited everyone for a meal at my home,” cherishing the experience and the positive reception.

The event was made even more special by the presence of his family. His mother became emotional after his first throw, while his 70-plus grandfather took his very first flight to witness the competition.

  • Neeraj is refining his technique to improve power transfer and run-up fluidity.
  • He is currently blending new techniques with old habits during competitions.
  • Coach Jan Zelezny is providing patient guidance, focusing on the Tokyo World Championships.
  • New exercises and shorter cross-steps have helped Neeraj manage his recurring groin strain.
  • The inaugural NC Classic event, hosted by Neeraj, was a major success with high fan turnout.

With his technique evolving and injuries managed, Neeraj Chopra will continue training in the Czech Republic for the next two months, fully focused on his performance at the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
