The first quarter of Fiscal Year 2026 saw the Maruti Ertiga maintain its strong lead as India’s top-selling MPV, continuing to outsell popular models like the Toyota Innova and Kia Carens.
MPVs Drive India’s Auto Growth
MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) and SUVs are now the main engines of growth for the Indian automotive industry. In fact, MPVs alone accounted for about 11 percent of all utility vehicle sales in the last fiscal year (FY2025), even surpassing sedans.
This trend is clearly continuing into the first quarter of FY2026 (April-June), with robust wholesale numbers for the family-friendly vehicle segment. Here’s a look at the top performers.
1. Maruti Ertiga: Still the Leader
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga continues its reign as the undisputed king of MPV sales. Having been the No. 1 seller for the past six fiscal years, it sold a remarkable 46,071 units in Q1 FY2026, marking a 6 percent increase year-on-year.
Available with both petrol and CNG powertrain options, its versatility and value continue to attract a wide range of buyers.
2. Toyota Innova (Hycross + Crysta): Steady Performer
Toyota’s legendary Innova brand, encompassing both the Hycross and Crysta models, remains a strong contender. Combined sales reached 25,383 units in Q1 FY2026, showing a slight 1 percent increase from the previous year.
The Innova Crysta is a diesel-only offering, while the Hycross provides petrol and hybrid options, catering to diverse customer preferences.
3. Kia Carens and Carens Clavis: Growing Strong
The Kia Carens has seen a healthy boost in sales, particularly with the introduction of its more premium sibling, the Carens Clavis, in May 2025. Together, these models sold 17,704 units in the first quarter, up 12 percent year-on-year.
Kia is expected to announce prices for the Carens Clavis EV soon, which could further drive sales for this popular MPV.
4. Maruti XL6: Premium Offering Sees Slight Dip
Marketed as the premium version of the Ertiga and sold through Maruti’s Nexa dealerships, the XL6 recorded 9,658 unit sales in Q1 FY2026. This represents a 4 percent decline compared to the same period last year.
Despite sharing the same 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine and gearbox options as the Ertiga, its sales trajectory differs.
5. Toyota Rumion: Impressive Growth
The Toyota Rumion, a rebadged version of the Maruti Ertiga, has quickly made its mark in the affordable MPV segment since its launch in August 2023. It secured the fifth spot on the list, selling an estimated 5,794 units.
This marks a significant 24 percent increase year-on-year, showcasing its growing popularity among buyers.
6. Renault Triber: Decline in Sales
The Renault Triber, known for offering MPV versatility at an affordable price point, continues to experience a sales decline. Sales for Q1 FY2026 stood at 4,233 units, a substantial 24 percent drop from the previous year.
However, a facelift for the Triber is expected to be launched on July 23, which might help revitalize its market performance.
7. Maruti Invicto: Improving Numbers
Produced by Toyota for Maruti under their global alliance, the Maruti Invicto sold 688 units in the April-June 2025 period. This is a positive 34 percent increase compared to Q1 FY2024.
8. Kia Carnival: Limited Supply, High Demand
The Kia Carnival (Limousine), launched in October 2024, has sold 252 units in Q1 FY2026. Despite its premium price tag, the model is reportedly sold out for the year, indicating strong demand for its enhanced luxury features.
9. Toyota Vellfire: Ultra-Luxury Segment Holds Strong
Even with an extremely high price, the ultra-luxurious Toyota Vellfire continues to find buyers. It sold 205 units in Q1 FY2026, a minor 2 percent decrease year-on-year.
This vehicle’s consistent demand has even prompted new entrants into the luxury MPV market, like JSW MG Motor India with its all-electric M9.
10. Mahindra Marazzo: Facing Challenges
The Mahindra Marazzo, the sole MPV from the brand, had a challenging quarter, selling only 27 units. Mahindra has not produced any Marazzo units from its factory in the past three months, with current sales coming from existing inventory.
- The Maruti Ertiga firmly holds the top position in the MPV segment.
- Toyota’s Innova and Kia’s Carens are strong contenders, consistently ranking in the top three.
- Sales of more affordable MPVs like the Renault Triber and Mahindra Marazzo are struggling.
- Premium and luxury MPVs like the Kia Carnival and Toyota Vellfire show strong demand despite their high prices.
The MPV segment clearly remains a vital and evolving part of the Indian automotive landscape, driven by diverse customer needs and new model introductions.
