MG Motor is expanding its premium Select showrooms to embrace a multi-powertrain strategy, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, alongside battery electric vehicles.

MG’s New Premium Vision Unveiled

MG has officially opened its first Select chain premium showroom in Thane, Maharashtra. This new retail space is designed to cater to premium clientele, focusing on ‘affordable’ luxury vehicles.

Initially, it was thought that the Select initiative would be exclusively for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). However, MG has now confirmed a broader approach, welcoming multiple powertrain options.

This revised strategy will encompass a range of vehicles, including traditional hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and born-electric vehicles. Anurag Mehrotra, MD, JSW MG Motor, explained at the launch that while the approach is flexible, each powertrain option will require a separate business case before investment decisions are made.

Adapting to a Shifting Market

One key reason for this strategic shift is the global slowdown in the adoption of BEVs. Many major automakers worldwide have begun to extend their timelines for fully electric lineups or reduced the number of BEVs they plan to launch in the coming years due to decreased demand.

MG’s decision reflects a pragmatic response to these evolving market dynamics. By diversifying its offerings, the company aims to better meet varied consumer preferences and market realities.

Introducing the Flagship Models

The first two models destined for the Select network are the M9 MPV and the Cyberster roadster. MG believes both vehicles will tap into previously unexplored segments, particularly within the electric vehicle space.

The Cyberster, a niche offering imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), is set to generate brand aspiration and capture attention. However, the M9 MPV is expected to be the true game-changer, positioning itself to compete directly with luxury MPVs like the Toyota Vellfire and Kia Carnival.

What’s Next for MG’s Lineup?

MG boasts a robust global portfolio that includes a variety of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Most of these models are SUVs or SUV-inspired, which gives a strong indication of the company’s likely direction for the Indian market.

Potential future additions could include models such as the MG4, MG S5, MG3, MG ZS, and the MG HS. This wider selection would allow MG to offer more choices to premium customers seeking diverse fuel options.

  • MG’s Select showrooms will now feature a multi-powertrain strategy.
  • This includes hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles.
  • The shift is partly driven by the global slowdown in BEV adoption.
  • The M9 MPV and Cyberster roadster are the first models for the Select network.
  • Future offerings may include more hybrid and plug-in hybrid SUVs from MG’s global range.

This strategic pivot underscores MG’s commitment to adapting to market dynamics and offering a more comprehensive range of premium vehicles in India.
