Anurag Basu’s romantic musical drama “Metro In Dino” is off to a strong start at the box office, quickly surpassing its predecessor’s lifetime earnings and inching closer to the Rs 20 crore mark.

Gaining Momentum at the Box Office

The star-studded film “Metro In Dino,” featuring Aditya Roy Kapur and Sara Ali Khan, has shown significant growth since its release. On its third day, Sunday, the movie reportedly collected an estimated Rs 7.25 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.

This strong weekend performance has pushed its total net box office collection to Rs 16.75 crore. The film’s earnings saw a notable jump from Saturday’s Rs 6 crore, indicating positive word of mouth is building.

Outperforming Its Predecessor

In a remarkable achievement, “Metro In Dino” has already surpassed the total net collection of its first installment, “Life In A Metro” (2007). The original film, which starred the late Irrfan Khan, had a lifetime net collection of Rs 15.63 crore and a worldwide gross of Rs 24.15 crore.

Despite receiving critical acclaim, “Life In A Metro” was not a blockbuster hit. The spiritual sequel, however, has managed to eclipse these numbers within its first weekend, signaling a more robust commercial run.

Audience Turnout and Occupancy

On its first Sunday, “Metro In Dino” recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 39.75% across theatres. The evening shows saw the highest turnout at 57.14%, followed by afternoon shows at 46.62%.

Chennai emerged as a top-performing region, registering an impressive 78.50% theatre occupancy for the film.

Holding Strong Amidst Competition

The film is navigating a crowded release schedule, competing with several other major Indian and Hollywood productions. Indian films like Aamir Khan’s “Sitaare Zameen Par,” Kajol’s “Maa,” and Vishnu Manchu’s “Kannappa” are also drawing audiences.

Additionally, Hollywood blockbusters such as Brad Pitt’s F1 movie and Scarlett Johansson’s “Jurassic World: Rebirth” are in theatres. Despite this intense competition, “Metro In Dino” is maintaining a strong foothold, demonstrating its appeal to viewers.

Critical Insights and Ensemble Cast

“Metro In Dino” has received mixed reviews from critics. A review from SCREEN praised the film’s “nimble writerly leaps” and natural-sounding dialogues, highlighting how characters felt authentic rather than delivering rehearsed lines.

However, the review also noted that the film tends to slacken after the interval and struggles to fill its nearly three-hour runtime. The ensemble cast includes a host of talented actors alongside Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur, such as Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, and Fatima Sana Shaikh.

  • “Metro In Dino” collected Rs 7.25 crore on its third day, bringing its total to Rs 16.75 crore.
  • It surpassed “Life In A Metro”‘s lifetime collection (Rs 15.63 crore) in just three days.
  • The film is performing well despite stiff competition from other new releases.
  • Sunday occupancy was nearly 40% overall, with Chennai leading at 78.50%.

The film’s performance indicates a positive trend, suggesting it could continue to build momentum in the coming days.
