Actor R Madhavan recently came to his Dhurandhar co-star Ranveer Singh’s defense, stating that a few unsuccessful films don’t define an actor’s entire career and that Ranveer was “never written off.”
Madhavan Stands Up for Ranveer
R Madhavan, who is set to share the screen with Ranveer Singh in the upcoming film *Dhurandhar*, addressed recent media speculation about Ranveer’s career. When asked if *Dhurandhar* marked a comeback for Ranveer after being “written off,” Madhavan firmly disagreed.
“I don’t think Ranveer Singh has ever been written off,” Madhavan stated. He added that a couple of “not so good” films don’t signify the end of an actor’s career, emphasizing Ranveer’s talent as an “extraordinary actor.” Madhavan suggested that such narratives are often created by the press.
Quality Over Quantity in Bollywood
Madhavan also took the opportunity to discuss the pace of filmmaking in the industry, comparing it to Hollywood. He noted that major stars like Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks typically do fewer films in their lifetime, focusing on quality rather than quantity.
“They barely do 14-15 movies in their entire life,” Madhavan observed. He believes that this slower pace allows for better storytelling. He contrasted this with the common Indian industry mindset where actors feel insecure if they aren’t constantly shooting. “Both Ranveer and I don’t come from that insecurity,” he affirmed.
Catering to the Empowered Audience
The actor highlighted a significant shift in audience expectations, calling it a “whole new era.” He explained that today’s audiences are well-informed and demand high-quality content, much like they would question a delayed flight.
“If we are making a movie for the empowered Indian, then we will have to make efficient films,” Madhavan explained. He stressed that creating such films takes time, dismissing the idea that a gap in projects means an actor is losing market relevance. Madhavan concluded that while the media might “write us off and write us in,” actors remain focused on their craft.
Ranveer’s Recent Journey
Ranveer Singh has had a career marked by significant highs since his debut in 2010. While films like *Bajirao Mastani*, *Padmaavat*, and *Gully Boy* showcased his versatility, some recent projects faced challenges.
His 2021 film *83*, despite critical acclaim, was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic at the box office. This was followed by *Jayeshbhai Jordaar* and *Cirkus* in 2022, which did not perform as expected. However, Ranveer bounced back strongly with the hit *Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani* in 2023 and delivered a memorable cameo in *Singham Again*.
What’s Next: Dhurandhar
Ranveer Singh’s next venture, *Dhurandhar*, is highly anticipated. Directed by Aditya Dhar, known for *URI: The Surgical Strike*, the film is set to release on December 5. It also features a strong ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal.
