Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon recently shared his candid thoughts on the state of Test cricket pitches, particularly criticising the ‘flat’ surfaces seen during the India-England series and advocating for a more balanced contest between bat and ball.
Pitches: Where’s the Bat-Ball Battle?
Lyon didn’t hold back, taking a clear dig at the uninspiring pitches witnessed in the recent India-England Tests. He specifically pointed to the Old Trafford match, which ended in a drab draw despite India batting for 143 overs to save the game.
He praised Australian conditions, highlighting how they consistently offer a compelling battle between bat and ball. “That’s the way cricket should be,” Lyon stressed, emphasising that fans crave competitive action, not one-sided affairs. “They don’t really want to watch what happened over in Manchester last week,” he quipped.
Bazball Challenge Down Under
Looking ahead to England’s tour of Australia, Lyon fully expects the ‘Bazball’ approach to be deployed against him. He noted that touring teams often target the spinner, and he’s ready for the challenge.
“Guys trying to attack me bring me into the game. So I’m looking forward to that,” Lyon stated. He’s already devising strategies and plans to counter England’s aggressive style, viewing it as “amazing theatre” for the sport.
Reflecting on a Personal Snub
Lyon also touched on his disappointment after being left out of the third Test against West Indies, a decision he described as hurtful but understandable. He believed he could play a role in any conditions and also missed sharing the field with Mitchell Starc for his 100th Test.
Despite his personal feelings, Lyon lauded Scott Boland’s exceptional performance in his place, especially his hat-trick and the team’s ability to bowl West Indies out for just 27 runs. He found it “pretty fun to watch” from the sidelines.
Backing Young Talent
The veteran off-spinner also offered support to teenage opener Sam Konstas, who has faced recent scrutiny. Lyon urged patience, reminding everyone that young players go through learning curves and need the full backing of senior teammates.
He expressed confidence that Konstas would benefit from upcoming Australia A tours and Shield cricket. Lyon similarly backed Marnus Labuschagne, whose Test record speaks for itself, predicting bigger and better things from the determined batter despite a recent dip in form.
