Kia has officially launched its new Carens Clavis EV in India, with prices starting from Rs 17.99 lakh, marking its first mass-market electric vehicle produced in the country.
Kia Carens Clavis EV: Pricing and Significance
The new Kia Carens Clavis EV enters the market with an ex-showroom price range of Rs 17.99 lakh to Rs 24.49 lakh in India. This launch is a significant step for Kia, as it’s their first made-in-India mass-market electric vehicle, following the premium EV6 and EV9 models.
The Carens Clavis EV is a direct electric conversion of the recently introduced ICE-powered Carens Clavis MPV, aiming to bring electric mobility to a wider audience.
Powering Up: Specs, Battery, and Range
Under the hood, the Carens Clavis EV shares its platform and battery options with the Hyundai Creta Electric. It’s available with two battery choices to suit different needs.
The smaller 42kWh battery pack offers a claimed range of 404km. For those seeking more distance, a 51.4kWh unit provides an extended claimed range of up to 490km.
Powering the MPV is a front-axle mounted electric motor, delivering 171hp and 255Nm of torque. Kia claims an impressive 0-100kph acceleration in just 8.4 seconds. Drivers can also utilize four levels of regenerative braking and a convenient steering column-mounted drive selector.
Design Evolution: Exterior and Interior
While largely retaining the familiar look of the ICE Carens Clavis, the EV version features several distinct updates. The front bumper has been subtly reworked, now housing the charging port on the nose.
A thin LED band connecting the DRLs is now illuminated, a premium touch compared to the standard model. New “ice-cubed” LED fog lamps and a silver trim on the lower bumper further differentiate it.
From the side, new aero-optimised alloy wheels are the main change, while the rear largely mirrors the regular Carens, save for an EV badge. Inside, the dashboard design remains familiar, but the center console adopts a new floating design, creating additional storage space.
The Carens Clavis EV also gets unique upholstery colors and is exclusively available in a 7-seater configuration, emphasizing its family-friendly appeal.
Packed with Features and Safety
The Carens Clavis EV is well-equipped with modern features designed for comfort and connectivity. Highlights include twin 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a switchable touch-sensitive panel for HVAC and media controls.
Other premium amenities include an 8-speaker Bose sound system, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger, ventilated front seats, and a powered driver’s seat. For added convenience, the second-row seats offer one-touch electric tumble, and there’s even a “Boss-mode” feature for rear passengers.
Safety is a priority, with six airbags, ESC, ABS, hill-start assist, TPMS, and all-four-disc brakes standard across all variants. Higher trims benefit from Level 2 ADAS and a 360-degree camera. A virtual engine sound system is also included for pedestrian safety.
Who Are the Rivals?
In the Indian market, the Kia Carens Clavis EV primarily competes with the BYD eMax 7. The BYD eMax 7 is priced competitively, ranging from Rs 17.99 lakh to Rs 24.38 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a direct alternative.
