Rani Kapur, mother of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur, is publicly demanding answers about her son’s sudden death amidst a massive family feud over his Rs 30,000 crore estate.

A Mother’s Plea for Closure

Rani Kapur recently spoke out, expressing deep uncertainty about the circumstances surrounding her son Sunjay’s death. Sunjay passed away in June due to cardiac arrest after reportedly swallowing a bee during a polo match.

“I still don’t know what happened to my son,” she stated. “I’m old now, and I need closure before I go.”

She emphasized her strong memories of building Sona Comstar, the family’s auto parts manufacturing company, alongside her late husband. Rani Kapur stressed the importance of preserving their family legacy, indicating her legal team will now handle all further communications.

The Heart of the Rs 30,000 Crore Dispute

The family dispute centers on Sona Comstar, which boasts a market capitalization close to Rs 30,000 crore. Days before her latest comments, Rani Kapur alleged that she was coerced into signing various documents following her son’s passing.

She claimed she was “compelled to sign various documents without explanation” and that “certain people” were strategically positioning themselves to control the family’s assets. This period of distress came less than a month after her son’s death, she added.

Priya Sachdev’s New Role and Identity

Amidst these allegations, Sunjay Kapur’s widow, Priya Sachdev, was appointed as a ‘non-executive director’ at Sona Comstar by the board. This development closely followed Rani Kapur’s public statements.

Priya Sachdev has also changed her social media handle from ‘Priya Sachdev Kapur’ to ‘Priya Sunjay Kapur.’ Her daughter from a previous marriage, Safira, has similarly dropped her surname on social media.

Sunjay Kapur’s Blended Family Life

Sunjay Kapur and Priya Sachdev married in 2017 and have one son, Azarius. Before this, Sunjay was married to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, with whom he shares two children, Samaira and Kiaan.

Weeks before his death, Priya had openly discussed their modern blended family dynamic. She recounted how she initiated contact with Karisma, leading to comfortable family gatherings and holidays for the children’s sake.

A Future Unfinished: Sunjay’s 10-Year Plan

Interestingly, Sunjay Kapur had shared his forward-looking vision just months before his unexpected demise. On a podcast, he revealed he had meticulously crafted a 10-year plan for his life.

“I’m not the sort of person who can sit around without a packed schedule,” he had said, emphasizing his desire to be the “master of his own time” and outlining his goals until 2025.

The Business Legacy Under Scrutiny

Sona Comstar’s shares are primarily held by the public (72%), with 28% (valued at Rs 8,200 crore) held by its corporate promoter, Aureus Investments Private Limited. Rani Kapur’s claims suggest a deep power struggle over this significant wealth.

She stated that her late husband had made her the sole beneficiary of Sona Comstar in his will before his death in 2015. Rani alleged she was denied access to her accounts and left “to the mercy of a select few for survival” following her son’s passing, implying that the family legacy is being unjustly usurped.

The unfolding events highlight a complex intersection of personal tragedy, family dynamics, and a high-stakes corporate battle.
