Anticipation for the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic, set to electrify Bengaluru’s Kanteerava Stadium, has been met with a dose of unfortunate news. Two of the javelin world’s most formidable names, two-time World Champion Anderson Peters and India’s own Asian Games silver medalist Kishore Jena, have regrettably withdrawn from the highly anticipated competition.

Unexpected Withdrawals Rock Bengaluru Javelin Event

The javelin community had eagerly awaited a potential showdown between India’s Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra and Grenada’s powerhouse thrower, Anderson Peters. However, Peters, a multiple World Championship medalist known for his gripping rivalry with Chopra, confirmed his withdrawal due to an ankle injury earlier this week. His absence is a significant blow, particularly for fans hoping to witness the kind of epic duels that characterized their past encounters, such as the 2022 World Championships in Eugene where Peters clinched gold with multiple 90-meter throws, or the 2023 World Championships in Budapest where he secured bronze behind Chopra.

Adding to the disappointment for local enthusiasts, India’s rising star, Kishore Jena, has also pulled out due to an ankle injury. The 28-year-old Jena, who earned a memorable silver medal at the Asian Games, was one of five promising Indian javelin throwers slated to compete alongside the iconic Neeraj Chopra. His spot in the lineup will now be filled by Yashvir Singh, ensuring the Indian representation remains robust.

Neeraj Chopra’s “Dream Project” and Its Evolving Roster

More than just a competition, the Neeraj Chopra Classic embodies a profound vision. This event, meticulously organized in collaboration with JSW Sports and sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), is touted as a “dream project” by the Olympic champion himself. It aims to establish India as a credible and capable host for elite-level track and field events, fostering a culture of high-performance athletics within the nation.

Despite these prominent withdrawals, the organizers have moved swiftly to ensure a world-class field. Poland’s Cyprian Mrzyglód, a 2019 European U23 champion with a personal best throw of 84.97 meters, has been named as Anderson Peters’ replacement. This isn’t the first roster change for the inaugural event; last month, another Polish thrower, Martin Konecny, stepped in for Japan’s Asian Games bronze medalist Genki Dean.

A Galaxy of Javelin Stars Still Set to Shine

While the absence of Peters and Jena is felt, the confirmed international lineup for the Neeraj Chopra Classic remains an impressive assembly of global talent. Fans in Bengaluru can still look forward to witnessing the formidable prowess of 2016 Rio Olympic gold medalist Thomas Röhler from Germany, alongside 2015 World Champion Julius Yego of Kenya. The field is further bolstered by American thrower Curtis Thompson, Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio da Silva, and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage.

The robust Indian contingent will be led by the incomparable Neeraj Chopra. He will be joined by Asian Championships silver medalist Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, Sahil Silwal, and the newly included Yashvir Singh. This strong domestic presence underscores the burgeoning talent and competitive spirit within India’s javelin ranks, promising an exciting showcase of both national and international skill.

Granted Category A status by World Athletics, the Neeraj Chopra Classic is set to be a landmark event. Though slightly altered from its initial lineup, it promises to be a thrilling demonstration of javelin excellence, solidifying India’s position on the global athletics map.
