Tesla has officially arrived in India, and alongside the launch of its Model Y, the brand is also bringing its critical Supercharger network to the country.
The Power Behind Tesla’s India Launch
Tesla’s global success is significantly attributed to its robust Supercharger network. This infrastructure is essential for reducing range anxiety and enabling seamless long-distance travel for electric vehicle owners.
Isabel Fan, Tesla’s Regional Director, highlighted this importance at the launch, stating, “Our success is not just down to vehicle technology, but the charging technology as well.” India will be equipped with the latest V4 Superchargers, maintaining Tesla’s consistent global standards.
Inside the Advanced V4 Supercharger Technology
The new V4 Superchargers are DC fast chargers, engineered for rapid energy delivery. They are capable of providing up to 500kW to cars, with a theoretical output reaching 600 kW per charging stall.
Crucially, a V4 charging point can add an impressive 267 km of range to a Model Y in just 15 minutes, operating at a maximum of 250kW. These chargers are built on a 1,000V bus system and feature a liquid-cooled cable, approximately 3 meters long.
Designed for resilience, they can operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -30 to +50 degrees Celsius. For the Indian market, Tesla will utilize the commonly used CCS type 2 plugs.
Where You’ll Find Tesla’s Charging Stations in India
Tesla plans to establish four V4 Supercharger stations in Mumbai, covering key areas like Lower Parel, Bandra Kurla, Navi Mumbai, and Thane. Delhi will also receive four stations in Aerocity, Saket, Gurugram, and Noida.
Each of these Supercharger stations will feature four charging points. Additionally, Tesla will deploy around a dozen “destination chargers” at various hotels and malls in both metros. These are ideal for overnight or medium-duration charging needs.
As seen in other markets, expect Tesla to strategically install Superchargers along popular routes connecting these major cities, further supporting long-distance travel.
Pricing and Service Expectations
While specific pricing details for the Supercharger network in India are yet to be announced, Tesla typically offers competitive rates for its vehicle owners globally. Owners of non-Tesla EVs can also access the network, though usually at a higher price, unless they subscribe to a dedicated service.
Tesla reports a remarkable 99.95 percent uptime for its Supercharger network in 2024, a standard it aims to uphold in India. The company is actively seeking partners to host its Supercharger stations, with partnership details available on the Tesla India website.
