As India prepares for the crucial fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, a major question mark hangs over the availability of their star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah.

The Big Bumrah Dilemma

Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management has been a hot topic throughout India’s Test series in England. Interestingly, the only match India has won so far, the second Test, was one where Bumrah was rested.

After that victory, Shubman Gill confidently stated Bumrah would play the next match. However, following India’s loss in the third Test, where Bumrah showed resilience with the bat, Gill’s response about his availability for the fourth Test became much more guarded: “You’ll get to know soon.”

With India trailing 2-1 in the five-match series, the decision on Bumrah’s participation for the Old Trafford Test, a venue he’s never played at, becomes critical for the team’s fortunes.

Experts Urge Bumrah’s Inclusion

Former India bowlers Irfan Pathan and Anil Kumble are both emphatic that Bumrah must play the fourth Test. Kumble, in particular, believes Bumrah should feature in both of the remaining matches.

“I would certainly, if I’m part of that group, push Bumrah to play the next game,” Kumble stated on JioCinema. He emphasized the series’ importance, noting that losing the fourth Test without Bumrah could seal India’s fate. Kumble also pointed out a long break after the series, suggesting Bumrah could rest later if needed.

Pathan echoed these sentiments, highlighting the disadvantage of frequent bowling lineup changes in such a high-stakes series. He stressed that Bumrah’s presence brings immense value, especially in English conditions.

Team Management’s Stance

Before the series began, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir had made it clear that Bumrah would only play three matches to manage his workload. This stance was reiterated after India’s defeat in the first Test.

“Haven’t decided which two matches Bumrah will play but he will play total of three. We need to manage his workload. Scoreline doesn’t change that… he will play three Tests only,” Gambhir had said previously. This commitment presents a challenge as the team navigates the crucial back-end of the series.

  • Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management has been a key discussion point throughout the series.
  • India’s only victory came in the Test where Bumrah was rested.
  • Former cricketers Anil Kumble and Irfan Pathan strongly advocate for Bumrah’s inclusion in the remaining matches.
  • Team management had a pre-planned strategy to limit Bumrah to three Tests for workload purposes.

The decision on Bumrah’s selection could significantly impact India’s chances of leveling the series and keeping their hopes alive for a Test Championship cycle triumph.
