The Goa government has temporarily halted the issuance of new Rent-a-Cab licenses, citing a rise in road accidents and increasing traffic congestion.

Cracking Down on Safety Concerns

This significant decision comes after a communication from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) highlighted a worrying trend of serious road accidents. Many of these incidents involved self-driven rental cars and bikes.

Goa Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho confirmed the suspension in a written reply to the state assembly. He was responding to a question raised by Independent MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco.

Understanding the Root Causes

A key factor contributing to these accidents is rash and negligent driving, often by tourists. There have even been cases of driving under the influence of alcohol, posing a serious risk to everyone on the road.

The State Transport Authority (STA) thoroughly discussed these issues during a meeting on February 24, 2025. They unanimously agreed to put new Rent-a-Cab licenses on hold, prioritizing public safety.

Another challenge is that many tourists are not familiar with Goa’s local traffic regulations and road conditions. This lack of awareness can lead to dangerous situations and has contributed to a rising number of accidents, some of which have been fatal.

Current Numbers and Illegal Operations

According to official figures, the Goa government has already issued 10 Rent-a-Cab licenses, which have, in turn, granted 6,762 permits for rental vehicles. This large number adds to the existing traffic challenges.

The transport department has also received various complaints about private vehicles being rented out illegally to tourists. This practice bypasses regulations and further complicates the enforcement of safety standards.

A Temporary Measure for a Safer Future

It’s important to note that this suspension is not a permanent ban. Minister Godinho clarified that the government will regularly review the situation. This will be especially crucial in the context of the upcoming Goa Road Safety Policy 2025.

The goal is to adopt a careful and regulated approach. The government aims to balance the growth of tourism with the critical need for public safety and sustainable urban transport planning.

  • New Rent-a-Cab licenses are suspended in Goa.
  • The decision addresses rising accident rates and traffic congestion.
  • The suspension is a temporary measure, not a permanent ban.

This move highlights Goa’s commitment to creating a safer environment for both its residents and the many tourists who visit its shores.
