Goa is actively pushing for the revival of crucial regional air routes and significant advancements in its aviation-tourism sector, aiming to boost connectivity and economic growth.
Boosting Goa’s Tourism Through Air Connectivity
Goa’s Tourism Minister, Rohan A. Khaunte, recently unveiled a comprehensive aviation-tourism roadmap. This plan was presented at the Western Region Civil Aviation Ministers’ Conference in Mumbai, a key event designed to foster collaboration between the central and state governments on aviation policy.
Minister Khaunte highlighted that Goa is prepared with both the infrastructure and the strong desire to see aviation and tourism flourish together. He emphasized that this synergy would create new jobs, enhance regional connections, and boost Goa’s international profile.
He also acknowledged the significant growth in India’s aviation sector, crediting the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu. Campaigns like “Dekho Apna Desh” and “Chalo India” have played a crucial role in boosting domestic and inbound tourism.
Key Proposals for Enhanced Connectivity
Goa presented several ambitious proposals to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. One major focus is advocating for a tourism-oriented Open Skies policy. This would enable more direct, long-haul international flights, particularly from the UK and Europe, making Goa more accessible to global tourists.
The state also requested inclusion in future bilateral Air Service Agreements to further open up international routes. Domestically, Goa is keen on reviving the Goa–Dehradun flight. Additionally, it proposed new regional air links to important pilgrimage and cultural sites like Velankanni, Tirupati, and Kolhapur.
Transforming Goa into an Aviation Hub
Beyond traditional flights, Goa has big plans for its Manohar International Airport in Mopa. The state is pushing for the rapid development of a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and a Flight Training Organisation (FTO) there. This initiative aims to establish Goa as a leading regional hub for aviation skills and training.
Innovation is also on the agenda, with proposals for expanding seaplane services, helicopter routes, and leveraging drone technology under the national Drone Didi initiative. Goa also revealed plans for a dedicated Drone and Aero-Sports Hub. A pioneering concept includes India’s first integrated air–sea tourism corridor, linking Dabolim Airport directly with the Vasco Cruise Terminal.
Skilling Local Talent for Aviation Growth
Goa isn’t just focusing on infrastructure; it’s investing in its people. The state proudly reported on its Aviation Skill Development Centre, which has successfully trained over 1,100 young individuals in just two years. This program boasts an impressive near-total placement rate, showcasing a scalable model for employment-driven growth in the aviation sector.
