Indian skipper Shubman Gill has surged into the top 10 of the ICC Test batting rankings for the first time, reaching a career-best No. 6 after his dominant performance against England.
Shubman Gill Climbs to Career-Best No. 6
Shubman Gill, leading the Indian side, has made a remarkable leap in the ICC Men’s Test batting rankings. Following his exceptional performance in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Gill has broken into the top 10, securing a career-best sixth position.
The young batter’s heroics included sensational scores of 269 and 161 in the match. This made him only the second player in Test history to score over 150 runs in both innings of a single Test, a truly remarkable feat.
A Memorable Win for the Skipper
The Edgbaston victory was particularly special for the 25-year-old, marking his first Test win as India’s captain. This commanding 336-run triumph helped India level the five-match series against England 1-1.
Gill’s previous best ranking was 14th, achieved in 2023. His current form is undeniable, as he has already amassed 585 runs in the ongoing series, with three more Tests still to be played.
Updates in the ODI Arena
While his Test performance is making headlines, Shubman Gill continues to dominate the ODI batting charts, holding onto his top spot. In other ODI news, Sri Lankan players Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis saw significant gains.
Asalanka moved up to sixth, and Mendis climbed 10 spots to reach tenth after their team’s 2-1 series victory over Bangladesh. Additionally, Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga jumped 11 places to eighth in the ODI bowling rankings, thanks to his nine wickets in the series.
Shifts in Test Bowling Rankings
In the Test bowling rankings, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah maintains his position as the top-ranked player, even after missing the Edgbaston Test due to workload management. Mohammed Siraj also moved up six spots to 22nd following his strong performance.
West Indies quicks Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph also saw their rankings improve, reflecting their recent efforts on the field.
Harry Brook Reclaims Top Spot
England’s Harry Brook has reclaimed the coveted number one spot in the Test batters’ rankings. His impressive 158 in the first innings at Edgbaston was key to this ascent.
Former No. 1 Joe Root has now slipped to second place, trailing Brook by 18 points. New Zealand’s Kane Williamson holds the third position, with India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal at fourth, and Australia’s Steve Smith completing the top five. Shubman Gill is now only 79 rating points behind Brook, showcasing his rapid progress.
