Indian captain Shubman Gill’s phenomenal performance against England has not only shattered records but also led former England batter Jonathan Trott to compare him to the legendary Virat Kohli.

Gill’s Edgbaston Masterclass

Shubman Gill delivered an unforgettable batting display in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. He smashed an incredible 269 runs off 387 balls in the first innings, then followed it up with a rapid 161 runs from just 162 balls in the second.

This comes after his impressive 147-run knock in the first innings of the opening Test. Gill’s shift to bat at number four in Edgbaston, from number three at Headingley, proved highly effective.

A “Carbon Copy” of Genius?

Jonathan Trott, the former England batter, was full of praise for Gill’s second innings. He noted Gill’s striking resemblance to Virat Kohli’s batting style, especially considering Kohli previously held the number four spot for India.

“I honestly feel privileged to be here and witness that innings,” Trott stated. He highlighted Gill’s ability to effortlessly switch gears and hit boundaries, including eight sixes, without resorting to slogging. Trott remarked, “It reminded me of the previous Indian number four — almost a carbon copy of that genius.”

Record-Breaking Feats

Gill’s innings at Edgbaston saw him etch his name into the record books multiple times. He became only the second Indian man, after Sunil Gavaskar, to score a double century and a century in the same Test match.

Furthermore, Gill surpassed Gavaskar’s long-standing record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a single Test match. He also broke MS Dhoni’s record for the most sixes hit by an Indian Test captain in both an innings and a match.

Unstoppable Form This Series

Gill’s incredible form in the ongoing five-match series is staggering. He has accumulated an astonishing 585 runs in just four innings so far. This puts him well within reach of breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test series, which stands at 774.

Trott expressed his admiration, saying, “I don’t think he could’ve dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour.” Gill’s consistent brilliance has set a high standard for the rest of the series.

  • Shubman Gill scored 269 and 161 in the second Test against England.
  • Former England batter Jonathan Trott compared Gill’s batting style to Virat Kohli’s.
  • Gill is only the second Indian to score a double century and a century in the same Test.
  • He broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian in a single Test match.
  • Gill has already amassed 585 runs in four innings this series.

As the series progresses, all eyes will remain on Shubman Gill to see if he can continue his record-breaking spree and lead India to further success.
