Shubman Gill has smashed another record, becoming the Indian captain with the most runs in a single Test series, while also joining an elite list for scoring four centuries in a series.

Gill’s Historic Feat at The Oval

Shubman Gill is making headlines again, this time for setting a new benchmark as an Indian captain. During the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, he surpassed previous records for the most runs scored by an Indian skipper in a single Test series.

Gill currently boasts an impressive 737* runs in the series. This incredible tally pushes him past the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who held the record with 732 runs against West Indies in the 1978/79 series.

Joining Cricket’s Elite Club

His extraordinary performance also places him in a very exclusive club when it comes to centuries. Gill has already notched up four tons in this ongoing series against England.

Only two other captains in Test history have achieved this rare feat: the iconic Sir Donald Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar. This truly highlights the exceptional form Gill is in.

Dominating the Series

Beyond the records, Gill’s consistent scoring has been a standout feature of the series. He currently holds an astonishing average of over 90.

At the time of an early lunch break at The Oval due to rain, Gill was unbeaten on 15 runs, continuing his strong run with the bat.

The Match So Far

In the crucial fifth Test, India navigated a challenging first morning at The Oval. They reached 72 for 2 at lunch, despite the overcast conditions that favored England’s seam bowlers.

England, who lead the series 2-1, were without their injured captain Ben Stokes and rested pace spearhead Jofra Archer. While their bowlers showed effort, they struggled to find a consistent cutting edge on what has been a batter-friendly pitch.

Early Wickets for England

Gus Atkinson, making his return, was the most threatening bowler for England. He struck early in the fifth over, dismissing opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for just two runs after a successful DRS review by captain Ollie Pope.

Later, KL Rahul, who had been in good form with over 500 runs previously, departed for 14. He played on to a delivery from Chris Woakes that was too close for his attempted cut shot.

India’s Resilience

With India at 38 for 2, England sensed an opportunity. However, as weak sunshine replaced the gloomy clouds, the pitch seemed to settle, and the Indian batsmen began to find their rhythm.

Number three batsman Sai Sudharsan played cautiously initially but grew in confidence, hitting the ball well and remaining unbeaten on 25 alongside Gill.

  • Shubman Gill set a new record for most runs by an Indian captain in a single Test series (737* runs).
  • He is only the third captain in Test history to score four centuries in a series, joining Sir Donald Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar.
  • Gill maintains an impressive series average of over 90.
  • India reached 72/2 at lunch in the 5th Test against England at The Oval.

This series continues to highlight Shubman Gill’s growing stature in Test cricket, with his records putting him among the pantheon of Indian greats.
