The rugged Ford Bronco SUV is embracing the electric era with an all-new “Bronco New Energy” model, set to offer both pure electric (EV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) options.
The Electric Bronco Roars In
Ford is expanding its popular Bronco lineup with an all-new electric variant, officially named the “Ford Bronco New Energy.” This new SUV takes design cues from the existing petrol-powered Bronco and Bronco Sport models, bringing that familiar rugged look into the electric era.
It will be available in two exciting versions: a pure electric (EV) model and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), offering buyers flexibility in their powertrain choice.
Built Big: Dimensions of the New Electric Bronco
This new electric Bronco is a collaborative effort between Ford and its Chinese partner, Jiangling Motors. In terms of size, it measures 5,025mm long, 1,960mm wide, and 1,815mm tall, boasting a substantial 2,950mm wheelbase.
Interestingly, the Bronco New Energy is slightly larger and heavier than its petrol-powered sibling, despite sharing a very similar wheelbase. For perspective, this electric Bronco is almost as long as the impressive Kia EV9 electric SUV.
Powering Up: EV and EREV Breakdown
The pure electric Bronco New Energy comes with an impressive all-wheel-drive dual-motor setup. It features a 177hp motor upfront and a more powerful 275hp motor at the rear, delivering a combined output of 311hp. This allows for a top speed of 170kph.
Powering this beast is a 105.4kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) blade battery supplied by BYD, offering a substantial 650km CLTC range. The presence of a lidar unit also hints at more advanced driver-assistance systems for the new Bronco.
For those looking for extended range flexibility, the EREV version is equally compelling. It combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine that acts as a generator, not directly powering the wheels, with electric motors. It has the same 177hp front motor as the EV, paired with a slightly smaller 245hp rear motor.
The EREV gets a 43.7kWh battery, providing a 220km all-electric range. When combined with the petrol engine, the total travel range extends to an impressive 1,220km.
- Pure EV Bronco offers 650km CLTC range from a 105.4kWh battery.
- EREV version boasts an extended combined range of 1,220km.
- It’s a joint project with Jiangling Motors and is slightly larger than the petrol Bronco.
- Features a dual-motor AWD system and advanced BYD battery technology.
Global Debut and Future Outlook
The Ford Bronco New Energy is set to debut first in China, with plans for a potential wider release in other international markets down the line. While Ford currently does not sell any vehicles in India, there’s speculation about its return with popular models like the Everest SUV.
Interestingly, other manufacturers like Maruti are also actively exploring EREV technology for the Indian market, signaling a broader shift towards such efficient and flexible powertrain solutions in the region.
