The Volkswagen Taigun facelift has been spied testing for the first time, signaling an upcoming update for the popular mid-size SUV expected by early 2026.
Spotting the Changes: Exterior Design
A camouflaged prototype of the Taigun facelift was recently seen on Indian roads. The camouflage was strategically placed at the front and rear, indicating where most of the design tweaks will occur.
Expect to see refreshed front and rear bumpers, along with revised headlamp and tail lamp units. Interestingly, there are no anticipated changes to the vehicle’s core sheet metal, meaning the overall silhouette will remain familiar.
Inside Scoop: Feature Enhancements
While the spy images didn’t reveal the interior, we can anticipate several updates inside the cabin. This includes new trim pieces, fresh colour options, and updated upholstery to give the interior a modern feel.
Crucially, the facelift is set to bring a longer list of features, including a highly anticipated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite. This technology is becoming increasingly common in the segment. The addition of a 360-degree camera is also highly likely, boosting convenience and safety.
Under the Hood: Familiar Powerhouses
Underneath, the Taigun facelift is expected to retain its current powertrain options at launch. It will continue to offer the reliable 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, producing 115hp and 178Nm of torque.
For those seeking more power, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, delivering 150hp and 250Nm, will also remain available. Both engines will still offer a manual gearbox option, and the larger 1.5-litre unit will continue with its 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
A New Gearbox on the Horizon
An exciting development is the planned introduction of a new 8-speed automatic gearbox for the 1.0-litre engine. This new unit is expected to replace the current 6-speed torque converter, though it might arrive about 6-8 months after the facelift’s initial launch.
Volkswagen and Skoda are also looking to localize the production of this new 8-speed gearbox. This move could potentially lead to better cost efficiency compared to the current imported 6-speed unit.
Navigating a Competitive Market
The mid-size SUV segment in India remains one of the most fiercely competitive. The Taigun, originally launched in September 2021, is due for an update to stay competitive against rivals.
With its expected early 2026 launch, the Taigun facelift will face new contenders entering the market, such as the upcoming Renault Duster and a new mid-size SUV from Nissan. These updates are vital for the Taigun to maintain its strong position.
