Delhi’s draft industrial policy for 2025-35 proposes strategic interventions to transform the capital into a major global hub for business and leisure tourism.
A New Vision for Delhi’s Hospitality Sector
The Delhi government has unveiled its draft industrial policy for 2025-35, setting its sights on significantly boosting the hospitality sector. This comprehensive plan aims to position Delhi as a premier destination for both business and leisure visitors.
Alongside frontier tech services, research, and innovation, the hospitality industry is a key focus area. The policy is currently open for public feedback from stakeholders.
Expanding Hotel Infrastructure
A major proposal in the draft policy is to increase the number of hotel rooms, especially near prominent convention and exhibition centers like ITPO at Pragati Maidan and Yashobhoomi in Dwarka. This expansion will be facilitated through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models.
To support a “walk-to-work” culture and ease traffic, the policy suggests allowing hotels and serviced apartments within commercial centers located in industrial zones. Plots with access to 30-meter-wide roads could also be converted for such facilities.
Streamlining Delhi’s Culinary Scene
The policy also looks to enhance Delhi’s vibrant culinary and nightlife appeal. It recommends making the capital more restaurant- and bistro-friendly by simplifying regulatory compliance.
A reasonable alcohol policy is also part of the recommendations, aiming to create a more favorable environment for dining establishments.
Boosting MICE Tourism
Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism is identified as crucial for economic growth. The draft policy proposes providing credit enhancement for MICE infrastructure through bank coordination, utilizing a new Rs 400 crore venture capital fund.
Delhi already boasts major MICE setups like ITPO Pragati Maidan and Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Its excellent international connectivity, regional links, and modern convention centers make it a preferred destination for national and international events.
Investing in Skills and Economic Prosperity
The policy emphasizes capacity building for hospitality service providers and facilitators. This will be achieved through various skill initiatives launched by the government.
The hospitality sector is recognized as a cornerstone of Delhi’s economy, showcasing the city’s unique identity. Through these strategic initiatives, the policy aims to attract more tourists, provide exceptional experiences, and further bolster Delhi’s economic prosperity.
