The recent NC Classic transformed a javelin event into a high-energy carnival, showcasing a new era of fan engagement for Indian athletics, led by superstar Neeraj Chopra.

A Grand Welcome for Javelin

Bengaluru’s Kanteerava Stadium buzzed with excitement even before the javelin competition began. The goal was simple: make athletics fun for spectators, a stark contrast to how track-and-field events usually fare in India, despite the success of athletes like Neeraj Chopra.

The atmosphere was electric. World record holder and Neeraj’s coach, Jan Zelezny, strolled onto the track, pleasantly surprised by the cheers he received. Fans packed the stand behind the runway, waving red flags and banging noise-makers, ready to celebrate every throw.

The Spectacle Unfolds

The moment Neeraj Chopra joined Zelezny for a quick chat, the stadium erupted in a crescendo of cheers. Laser lights cut through the air, foot-thumping music played, and an all-female dance group performed on the immaculate green turf.

Haryana rapper Dhanda Nyoliwala added to the excitement, announcing throwers between his numbers and even performing a cheeky shadow-practice throw. The energy in the stadium only grew as the evening progressed, drawing fans deeper into the spectacle.

Neeraj Chopra: A Fan’s Champion

Among the thousands, one fan’s story highlighted Neeraj’s incredible connection with his supporters. Ranjith Ravichandran from Coimbatore had posted on X, asking for “Rs 2,000” to attend the NC Classic.

To his disbelief, Neeraj himself responded, promising to sponsor Ranjith’s trip with a full VVIP experience. Ranjith, who had faced personal hardships, couldn’t believe it was real until Neeraj’s team at JSW Sports confirmed everything.

The next day, on his 30th birthday, Ranjith was star-struck meeting Neeraj at the official hotel. “I was overwhelmed,” he shared, “India was lucky to have an athlete like him.”

Engaging the Crowd

About 10,000 tickets were sold for the event, with organizers even replacing older bucket seats to enhance the experience. Outside, familiar sights like face-painters offered tricolour designs for Rs 20, adding to the pre-event buzz.

The athletes’ entrance was a show in itself. Each javelin thrower walked over a red carpet, flanked by giant sparklers, with a child in tow, just like football players. Olympic champion Thomas Rohler high-fived the kids in a heartwarming moment.

Then came Neeraj. Chants of ‘Neeraj, Neeraj, Neeraj’ echoed through the stadium, reminiscent of the thunderous applause reserved for cricket legends in their prime. The NC Classic truly demonstrated how athletic events can capture the nation’s imagination.

  • The NC Classic redefined javelin events in India, turning them into high-energy, spectator-friendly spectacles.
  • Fan engagement, including personalized interactions like Neeraj Chopra sponsoring a fan’s trip, played a key role in the event’s success.
  • The blend of laser shows, live music, dance performances, and celebrity athletes created a carnival-like atmosphere, drawing massive crowds.

This event marks a significant step towards making track-and-field more accessible and exciting for a wider audience in India.
