Classic Legends has unveiled the new BSA Bantam 350, a motorcycle set to join the brand’s international lineup and notably shares a strong connection with the Jawa 42 FJ.
A Historic Name Reborn
The BSA Bantam name returns, resurrecting a legacy from 1948 to 1971 when the original lightweight two-stroke models were immensely popular. This new 350cc machine aims to become the most accessible and affordable offering in BSA’s modern portfolio, sitting below the Gold Star 650 and the upcoming Scrambler 650.
Familiar Power Beneath the Classic Look
While the Bantam name might be new to some, especially in India, the heart of this motorcycle is quite familiar. The Bantam 350 is powered by the same 334cc ‘Alpha 2’ engine found in other Classic Legends models like the Jawa 350 and the 42 FJ. A key visual difference is its single exhaust pipe, distinct from the twin pipes on its Jawa cousins.
Shared Foundations with the Jawa 42 FJ
Though specifics are yet to be fully revealed, the Bantam 350 is closely related to the Jawa 42 FJ in its chassis design and features. Visual cues strongly suggest this connection, including the single-piece seat with its gentle upward sweep, the design of the handlebar and headlight, and the twin rear shock absorbers. Even the wheels appear to be directly carried over from the FJ.
There are also subtle hints of the Yezdi Roadster, another 334cc product from Classic Legends. This can be seen in sleek details like the bar-end mirrors, the dainty indicators, and the small tail lamp perched atop the minimalist rear fender, contributing to a cohesive design language across the Classic Legends family.
Global Ambition, Not for India
The new Bantam 350 is slated for its initial launch in the UK and Europe, followed by its introduction in markets like the USA. BSA currently has a presence in twelve countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and Japan, where the Bantam is expected to be sold.
However, despite being manufactured in India, the Bantam 350 will not be sold in its home country. Classic Legends already offers a comprehensive range of products in this displacement and price segment through its Yezdi and Jawa brands. Furthermore, the BSA brand doesn’t hold the same widespread recognition or nostalgic appeal in India as Yezdi and Jawa do, making its introduction here less strategic at this time.
- The new BSA Bantam 350 revives a historic name for international markets.
- It shares its 334cc engine and significant chassis components with the Jawa 42 FJ.
- The Bantam 350 will serve as the entry-level model for BSA overseas.
- Despite being manufactured in India, it will not be sold there due to existing brand portfolios and recognition.
The Bantam 350 marks another step in Classic Legends’ strategy to expand the BSA brand globally, offering a new entry point into their retro-inspired motorcycle lineup.
