Bhitarkanika National Park has officially reopened its gates to tourists after a three-month closure, offering visitors a refreshed and enhanced experience.

A Warm Welcome Back

Good news for nature lovers! Bhitarkanika National Park, a renowned wildlife sanctuary, is once again welcoming tourists. The park had been closed from May 1 to July 31 to provide a safe and undisturbed environment for the mating and nesting of its famous saltwater crocodiles.

This annual closure ensures the protection of these magnificent reptiles during a crucial period of their life cycle, highlighting the park’s commitment to conservation.

Enhanced Visitor Experience Awaits

The park management has been busy during the closure, implementing several upgrades to improve the visitor experience. A highlight is the newly renovated 600-meter-long wooden canopy bridge, which stands 15 meters above the ground within the dense mangrove forest.

This impressive bridge offers an unparalleled opportunity to observe the unique flora and fauna from a bird’s-eye view. Additionally, the park’s watchtower, hunting tower, and the special pond dedicated to “Gori,” the rare albino crocodile, have all been refurbished.

Planning Your Visit

For those eager to explore Bhitarkanika, booking your trip is straightforward. You can secure your visit through the official website, www.ecotourodisha.com. The park also provides convenient accommodation options within its premises, with forest rest houses available at Dangamala and Gupti.

To preserve the park’s pristine environment, strict rules are in place. Visitors are kindly reminded that plastic disposables are completely banned, and littering is prohibited. A comprehensive “green protocol” will be enforced to ensure the protection and sustainability of this vital ecosystem for all to enjoy.

A Rich Tapestry of Wildlife

Bhitarkanika is a biodiversity hotspot, home to an incredible array of wildlife. Its most famous residents are the saltwater crocodiles, with an impressive count of 1,826 crocodiles as of January 2025. This year alone, approximately 117 saltwater crocodiles nested within the park’s protected areas.

Beyond crocodiles, the park boasts spotted deer, elusive fishing cats, and wild boars. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the numerous avian species, especially in the Mathadia, Durgaprasaddia, and Laxmiprasaddiha forests.

More than 10 species of resident birds, including the open-billed stork, little cormorant, median egret, and purple heron, have arrived for their nesting season. Visitors have the unique chance to witness the fascinating stages of nest building, egg incubation, and the nurturing of fledglings up close.

  • Bhitarkanika National Park reopened on August 1 after a three-month closure for crocodile nesting season.
  • Major renovations include a 600-meter canopy bridge and refurbished watchtowers.
  • Visitors can book online and stay at on-site forest rest houses.
