Star Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes India’s pace attack for the upcoming Lord’s Test against England, featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep, looks “demonic” and poses a significant threat to the home side.

A “Demonic” Bowling Attack

With India having leveled the series 1-1 after their win in the second Test, Jasprit Bumrah is set to return to the playing XI, having been rested previously. Ashwin shared his insights on his YouTube channel, “Ash ki Baat,” highlighting the impact of this strong bowling lineup.

According to Ashwin, the inclusion of Bumrah alongside the impressive duo of Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep creates a formidable force. He specifically stated, “With Siraj, Akash Deep and Bumrah coming in, this Indian attack looks demonic. Demonic is the right word.”

He further elaborated that such an attack would be particularly devastating on a pitch offering even a little assistance. Ashwin pointed out that Lord’s is known for many Leg Before Wicket (LBW) dismissals. He anticipates that India’s relatively shorter pace attack will consistently challenge the pads, bringing edges into play as well.

Strategic Team Choices

The veteran spinner views Bumrah’s return as a straightforward swap, likely replacing Prasidh Krishna, while Akash Deep, who performed admirably in the second Test, is expected to retain his spot. Despite Siraj having bowled a considerable number of overs, Ashwin believes he won’t be rested.

Ashwin emphasized Siraj’s importance, stating that with the series finely poised at 1-1, Siraj should definitely play. He acknowledged Siraj’s workload but noted that his action might make him more susceptible to injury compared to Bumrah’s unique style.

England’s Batting Challenge

Ashwin also weighed in on England’s batting struggles, particularly focusing on their captain, Joe Root. Root has had an uncharacteristically quiet series so far, managing just 109 runs in four innings.

Ashwin suggests that England’s chances in the upcoming Test heavily rely on Root finding his form and posting a substantial score. He believes that if Root performs, England has a chance; otherwise, India remains the firm favorite.

He added that the series has been less about Joe Root and more about India’s strong seam attack, which has put England in a difficult position.

The “Bazball” Dilemma

The conversation also touched upon England’s aggressive “Bazball” approach under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes. Ashwin expressed skepticism about this English batting lineup’s ability to play for a draw, especially after batting for a full day.

He believes that this current England side lacks the defensive technique required to grind out a draw, making them prone to getting bowled out even within two sessions. He referenced the 2021 Lord’s Test, where Virat Kohli famously declared “60 overs of hell,” noting that even that English lineup, which he deemed defensively weak, couldn’t last, and this current one is “even worse.”

  • Ravichandran Ashwin labels India’s pace attack for Lord’s as “demonic” with Bumrah, Siraj, and Akash Deep.
  • Bumrah’s return is seen as a straight swap, with Siraj and Akash Deep expected to retain their places.
  • Ashwin believes India’s bowlers will exploit Lord’s conditions, focusing on LBWs and edges.
  • England’s batting struggles, particularly Joe Root’s form, are highlighted as key to their chances.
  • Ashwin doubts England’s “Bazball” approach will allow them to play for a draw in the upcoming Test.

As the series heats up, all eyes will be on how India’s “demonic” pace battery performs and whether England can counter their formidable challenge at Lord’s.
