Senior actors Shwetha Menon and Devan are set to contest for the top post of President in the upcoming elections for the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

The Presidential Race: A Two-Way Battle

The highly anticipated AMMA elections, scheduled for August 15, will see a direct contest for the president’s role. Initially, six candidates had filed nominations for this prestigious position. However, four individuals, including veteran actor Jagadeesh, later withdrew their names.

Sources indicate that Jagadeesh, who was considered a strong contender, reportedly pulled out to support Shwetha Menon. This move suggests a potential consensus building within the association to elect a woman as president. However, Devan has firmly stated his intention to remain in the race, leaving the final decision to AMMA members.

Key Posts See Contests and Notable Withdrawals

The position of General Secretary will also be contested, with actors Raveendran and Kukku Parameswaran vying for the role. Four other nominations for this post were withdrawn, including that of actor Baburaj.

Baburaj later announced on social media that he would be dissociating from AMMA activities. He cited being publicly maligned by a section of the association members as his reason for stepping back.

For the Vice President’s post, three actors are in the fray: Jayan Cherthala, Nasser Latif, and Lakshmipriya. Meanwhile, Anoop Chandran and Unni Shivapal are the two remaining candidates for the Treasurer’s position.

Unopposed Victory and Executive Committee Dynamics

Ansiba Hassan secured the Joint Secretary post unopposed, as a dozen other individuals who had filed nominations for the same position withdrew their names. This streamlined the election process for that particular role.

The elections will also determine the 11-member executive committee, which includes four positions specifically reserved for women. In the general category, eight actors are competing for seven available seats, including Joy Mathew, whose nomination for president was earlier rejected. For the four reserved seats for women, five female actors are currently contesting.

A New Era for AMMA Leadership?

This election cycle is notable for the absence of many frontline stars, including former president Mohanlal, from the contest. This has led to a flurry of activity and keen interest in the leadership roles, signaling a potential shift in the association’s governance.

The upcoming elections are set to shape the future direction of AMMA, with new faces and diverse voices vying for influence within the Malayalam film industry’s prominent body.
