Electric scooters are making big waves in the Indian market, with TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak climbing into the top 10 best-selling scooters for Q1 FY2026, even as the dominant Honda Activa sees its market share shrink.

Scooter Market Stays Resilient in Q1 FY2026

The scooter segment recorded strong sales of 1.66 million units between April and June 2025. This shows remarkable stability, with only a minor 0.2 percent year-on-year drop.

In contrast, motorcycles and mopeds faced tougher times, experiencing declines of 9.2 percent and 11 percent respectively. This highlights the enduring popularity of scooters among Indian consumers.

Activa’s Reign Continues, But Its Share Dips

The Honda Activa still holds the top spot, selling over 5.68 lakh units in the first quarter. However, its sales dipped by 20 percent compared to last year.

This decline caused its market share to fall significantly, from 45 percent to 34 percent. The Honda Dio also saw a 16 percent drop in sales, contributing to an overall 19 percent decrease in Honda’s total scooter sales.

TVS Rides High with Jupiter and iQube

TVS is celebrating impressive growth, particularly with its Jupiter model, which saw a 37 percent increase in sales to over 3 lakh units. This solidifies its position as the second best-selling scooter in the country.

The electric TVS iQube was another major success, selling nearly 70,000 units and becoming India’s highest-selling EV. Its 41 percent year-on-year growth helped boost TVS’s overall scooter market share from 23 percent to 29 percent, partly due to recent price adjustments.

Bajaj Chetak Powers Up the EV Segment

Bajaj Chetak is rapidly gaining ground, with sales soaring by 53 percent to over 62,000 units in Q1 FY2026. It’s now hot on the heels of the iQube, trailing by less than 7,000 units.

The introduction of the new entry-level Chetak 3001 variant seems to have played a key role in boosting demand. This model offers a more affordable option, positioning it strategically between TVS’s popular iQube variants.

Other Key Players: Suzuki, Yamaha, Hero

The Suzuki Access continues to perform strongly, with over 1.92 lakh units sold and an 8 percent increase year-on-year. It remains a leading choice in the 125cc scooter segment.

Yamaha’s Ray ZR sold 41,480 units, while Hero’s Destini 125 saw a 12 percent growth with 39,551 units. Just outside the top 10, the Ather Rizta electric scooter made a remarkable entry with 34,149 units, quickly surpassing 1 lakh cumulative sales since its April 2024 launch.

The Shift: 125cc and Electric Scooters Gain Traction

A clear trend emerging from the sales data is the growing preference for 125cc scooters and electric models. Apart from the TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak, most scooters in the top 10 are either 125cc models or have 125cc siblings.

This indicates a significant consumer shift away from 100cc models towards scooters that offer more power and advanced features.

What’s Next for the Electric Scooter Market?

The electric scooter segment is set for further expansion, with several new models on the horizon. TVS is reportedly developing an entry-level electric scooter, possibly named the Orbiter.

Yamaha is also planning its entry into the electric scooter space through a collaboration with Bengaluru-based startup River Mobility. Additionally, Kinetic Watts and Volts has re-entered the market with its DX electric scooter, and Vida has launched the VX2 family electric scooter with a Battery-as-a-service (BaaS) plan, making EVs more accessible.

  • TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak have entered the top 10 best-selling scooters in Q1 FY2026.
  • Honda Activa remains number one but experienced a 20% sales dip and lost significant market share.
  • TVS Jupiter showed strong growth, and the iQube is now India’s highest-selling electric scooter.
  • The scooter market outperformed motorcycles and mopeds, showing resilience.
  • Consumers are increasingly opting for 125cc and electric scooter models.

These developments suggest an exciting and competitive future for India’s two-wheeler market, especially in the electric vehicle segment.
