Indian chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has made history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the semifinals of the FIDE Women’s World Cup, a significant achievement that also secures India a coveted spot in the Candidates tournament.

The Brutal Nature of the World Cup

The FIDE World Cup is considered one of chess’s most grueling tournaments. Its unforgiving knockout format leaves no room for error, pushing players through exhausting matches and tense tiebreaks.

Even chess legends like Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand can attest to its difficulty. Carlsen waited over a decade to win his only World Cup gold, while Anand, a two-time champion in an older format, never reached the semifinals under the current system.

Koneru Humpy’s Historic Ascent

Koneru Humpy’s emphatic journey to the semifinals in Batumi, Georgia, marks a splendid milestone for Indian chess. After securing a decisive 1-0 lead against China’s Yuxin Song, Humpy comfortably drew her second match to seal her spot.

This remarkable performance not only ensures Humpy’s place in the final four but also guarantees India a qualification spot for the prestigious Candidates tournament. With two Indian players, Divya Deshmukh and Harika Dronavalli, in separate quarterfinal brackets, India is assured of at least two semifinalists, further solidifying its presence at the top level.

A Masterclass Performance

Humpy demonstrated complete control in her game against Yuxin Song. Playing the Chigorin Variation of the Queen’s Pawn Game, she allowed her opponent to gain two pawns early on, only to clear her path with sharp tactical exchanges.

Despite Yuxin’s pawn advantage, Humpy maintained superior space and active pieces, eventually regaining her material and simplifying into a drawn endgame. Her precise play left Yuxin with no options, leading to a draw by three-fold repetition.

The Road to the Candidates Tournament

The FIDE Women’s World Cup is a cornerstone of the World Championship cycle, offering three direct qualification spots for the Candidates tournament. The winner of the Candidates earns the right to challenge the reigning World Champion, currently China’s Ju Wenjun.

Humpy’s next challenge will be against China’s Lei Tingjie, who has been in exceptional form, cruising through her quarterfinal. This semifinal clash pits India’s top-ranked player against the newly crowned World No. 2, promising a thrilling encounter.

Meanwhile, the all-Indian quarterfinal between Divya Deshmukh and Harika Dronavalli heads to tiebreaks after two prudent draws. The winner of their match will face China’s Tan Zhongyi, who eliminated India’s R. Vaishali in a hard-fought contest, setting up another exciting Indo-Chinese semifinal.

The coming days will feature intense battles as players vie for a spot in the final and the ultimate chance to challenge for the World Championship title.
