The Tata Punch has reached a significant milestone, producing 6 lakh units in less than four years and now accounting for over a third of the brand’s total car sales.

A Rapid Rise to Success

Launched in October 2021, the Tata Punch, which includes both its traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) and all-electric (EV) versions, has swiftly climbed the ranks.

This impressive feat underscores the compact SUV’s immense popularity and strong market acceptance across India. Its rapid production increase highlights its crucial role in Tata Motors’ portfolio.

Dominating the Sub-Compact Segment

The Punch has shown consistent growth since its debut, hitting the 1 lakh production mark in August 2022. It rapidly followed up with 2 lakh units by May 2023, 3 lakh by December 2023, and crossed the 5 lakh sales milestone in January 2025.

Tata Motors reports that the Punch commands a significant 38 percent market share in the sub-compact segment for FY2025, outperforming rivals like the Hyundai Exter. The model also saw a robust 15 percent year-on-year increase in sales, showcasing its sustained demand.

Understanding the Tata Punch Buyer

Interestingly, the Tata Punch has become a popular choice for first-time car owners. Nearly 70 percent of buyers for the petrol and CNG variants are purchasing a vehicle for the first time, reflecting its appeal to a new generation of drivers.

The Punch EV also sees a notable demographic trend, with 25 percent of its buyers being women. Geographically, Tier II cities lead the buyer base, accounting for 42 percent of sales, while Tier I and Tier III cities represent 24 percent and 34 percent, respectively.

Engine and EV Options

The Tata Punch offers a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, delivering 88hp on petrol and 74hp on CNG. Petrol variants come with both 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT options, while the CNG version is manual-only.

For those opting for electric, the Punch EV is available with two battery choices: a 25kWh unit paired with an 82hp front motor, or a larger 35kWh pack powering a 122hp motor. The EV models boast an MIDC-rated range of up to 365km. Prices for the Tata Punch lineup, including all-electric variants, range from Rs 6.20 lakh to Rs 14.44 lakh.
