Former England cricketer Stuart Broad has voiced strong disapproval over the fine handed to Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj for his animated celebration after dismissing Ben Duckett during a Lord’s Test match, calling the decision “ridiculous.”

Broad Backs Siraj’s Passion

Stuart Broad, speaking on the “For The Love Of Cricket” podcast with Jos Buttler, passionately defended Siraj’s actions. He argued that the Indian bowler did nothing fundamentally wrong.

According to Broad, Siraj was simply celebrating a crucial wicket that swung the momentum back in his team’s favor. The former England quick believes such displays of emotion are part of the game and shouldn’t be penalized.

The Lord’s Celebration Incident

The incident in question occurred on Day 4 of the Test, when Mohammed Siraj dismissed England opener Ben Duckett. Siraj celebrated intensely, roaring directly in Duckett’s face with bulging eyes and visible veins, even making light shoulder contact.

This aggressive display led to the umpires having a word with Siraj. Subsequently, the Indian bowler was fined 15 percent of his match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

ICC’s Stance on the Fine

The ICC confirmed that Siraj was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article pertains to using language, actions, or gestures that could disparage or provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.

The official ICC statement highlighted that Siraj “celebrated close to the batter in his follow-through and made contact as Duckett began his walk back to the Lord’s long room,” justifying the disciplinary action taken.

A Question of Consistency

Broad also took to social media to highlight what he perceived as an inconsistency in officiating. He compared Siraj’s fine to an unpunished incident involving Indian captain Shubman Gill.

The Gill incident unfolded on Day 3, where the Indian skipper had a fiery exchange with England’s Zak Crawley. Annoyed by Crawley’s perceived time-wasting, Gill ran from the slips, hurled verbal abuses, pointed fingers, and mock-clapped at Crawley and Duckett.

Broad emphasized that while players shouldn’t be “robots,” consistency in applying rules is paramount. He questioned why Siraj was penalized for an emotional celebration, while Gill’s more confrontational behavior went unpunished, creating a debate about the boundaries of on-field conduct.

  • Mohammed Siraj was fined 15% of his match fee for an aggressive celebration.
  • Stuart Broad called the fine “ridiculous,” arguing Siraj merely celebrated a key wicket.
  • The ICC cited Article 2.5, noting Siraj’s close proximity and contact with the batter.
  • Broad highlighted perceived inconsistency, comparing Siraj’s fine to unpunished actions by Shubman Gill.

This debate underscores the ongoing discussion about player conduct, on-field emotion, and the challenge of consistent enforcement in professional cricket.
