Thailand has decided to postpone its planned tourist entry fee until mid-2026, aiming to boost visitor numbers amid a slower-than-expected recovery in the travel sector.

The Entry Fee: On Hold for Now

The proposed “kha yeap pan din,” or “stepping onto Thai soil” fee, was initially approved in principle by Thailand’s Cabinet in February 2023. It was set to require air passengers to pay 300 baht (around 7.50 EU), while those arriving by land or sea would be charged 150 baht.

Initially scheduled for a 2025 rollout, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has now confirmed its deferral until mid-2026. This decision comes as the country monitors current market conditions and weaker-than-expected tourist arrivals.

Why the Delay? Economic Pressures and Slow Tourism

As of early July 2025, Thailand has recorded approximately 17 million tourist arrivals, which is about 5% lower than the same period in 2024. This slowdown is a significant concern for the tourism sector, which contributes nearly 20% of Thailand’s GDP.
