This week saw major global developments, from India’s pursuit of a trade deal with the US amid new tariff threats, to escalating conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and alarming reports of atrocities in Sudan.

India-US Trade Talks Face Hurdles

India is working to finalize a “mini” interim trade deal with the United States by August 1. Negotiations are focused on resolving differences over tariffs in key sectors like dairy, agriculture, and automobiles.

While India has offered market access in many areas, politically sensitive sectors such as agriculture, especially genetically modified products, remain “red lines.” Meanwhile, the US has extended reciprocal tariff deadlines, giving negotiators more time.

Adding to trade tensions, former US President Donald Trump recently announced a 50 percent tariff on copper imports, following similar duties on steel and aluminum. He also hinted at a potential 200 percent tariff on pharmaceutical exports, a move that could significantly impact India’s generics industry, a major supplier to the US.

Trump Targets BRICS Nations with Tariffs

Donald Trump labeled the BRICS group “anti-American” and threatened to impose additional tariffs on member countries. This comes as India seeks to finalize its trade deal with the US, creating a delicate balancing act for New Delhi.

The 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, despite the absence of Russian and Chinese leaders, saw members present a united front on several global issues. The joint statement condemned the Pahalgam terror attack, a win for India, but also took strong stances on Gaza and Iran.

The summit also discussed de-dollarization, though India clarified it is not a core policy but rather a way to de-risk trade through domestic currency transactions. PM Modi also completed a five-country tour, strengthening ties with African and Latin American nations.

Russia Intensifies Attacks on Ukraine

The conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, with Russia launching a record number of drones and missiles in recent days. These intensified attacks have severely strained Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

In response, the US, through President Trump, has pledged to resume the supply of defensive weapons, including critical Patriot air defense systems, to Ukraine via NATO. Trump also sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The United Nations reported June saw the highest monthly civilian casualties in Ukraine in three years, highlighting the dire humanitarian impact. Despite efforts by mediators like Pope Leo XIV, peace talks between Russia and Ukraine remain stalled.

Gaza Descends into a ‘Graveyard’

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has worsened dramatically, with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) describing the strip as a “graveyard of children and starving people.” Hundreds of Palestinians have reportedly been killed while seeking aid since May.

Ceasefire talks are deadlocked, primarily due to differing demands: Hamas seeks a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops, while Israel insists on the militant group’s unconditional surrender.

Amidst this, the US imposed sanctions on UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, citing her “illegitimate efforts” regarding the International Criminal Court.

War Crimes Reported in Sudan’s Darfur

Sudan’s western Darfur region is reportedly witnessing “war crimes and crimes against humanity” amid a devastating conflict since 2023. The ICC Deputy Prosecutor presented findings of widespread abuses to the UN Security Council.

The civil war has displaced approximately 14 million people and led to an estimated 62,000 deaths. Famine is escalating, and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and aid convoys, are being targeted.

  • India is balancing trade negotiations with the US against broader global tariff threats.
  • BRICS is navigating its identity as a global bloc amidst US pressure.
  • Conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza are deepening, causing immense humanitarian suffering.
  • Sudan’s Darfur region is facing reports of widespread atrocities and a severe humanitarian crisis.

These global events underscore a period of significant international volatility, with diplomatic challenges and humanitarian crises demanding urgent attention from world leaders.
