BMW is set to launch the second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe in India on July 17, with bookings for the new petrol-only 218 Gran Coupe now open.

Under the Hood: Engine Details

The new 2 Series Gran Coupe will initially arrive in India as the 218 Gran Coupe, powered exclusively by a petrol engine. This variant features a new 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, delivering 156hp and 230Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via an efficient 8-speed automatic gearbox.

It’s worth noting that the outgoing model came with a larger, more powerful 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that produced 190hp.

Sleeker, Sharper: Exterior Design

While the new 2 Series Gran Coupe maintains the same UKL2 platform as its predecessor, including the 2,670mm wheelbase and 1,800mm width, its overall dimensions have grown. The new model is 20mm longer at 4,546mm and 25mm taller at 1,445mm, offering a practical 430 litres of boot space.

The updated design features a sharper aesthetic with adaptive LED slimmer headlights and a distinctive backlit grille. As the 218 Gran Coupe will only be offered in the M Sport trim in India, expect sporty bumpers, sleek blacked-out elements, and stylish multi-spoke, dual-tone 18-inch alloy wheels as standard.

Inside: Modern Comfort and Tech

Step inside the BMW 218 Gran Coupe M Sport and you’ll find BMW’s signature minimalist interior, with a focus on clean lines and fewer physical buttons. A curved glass panel seamlessly integrates the 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, both angled subtly towards the driver for optimal ergonomics.

These high-resolution screens run on BMW’s latest OS9 software, ensuring a smooth and intuitive user experience. Standard interior trim includes elegant dark mocha brown upholstery on the seats and doors, with other upholstery options available for personalization.

The new Gran Coupe is packed with features, including a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger, and seamless wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. For added convenience and safety, it also comes with a 360-degree camera, automatic parking assist, an advanced ADAS suite, and a digital key that allows remote control of essential functions like locking, unlocking, cabin pre-cooling, and boot access.

Expected Price and Competition

Given the outgoing model’s price started at Rs 44.4 lakh, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is expected to be priced around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Its primary competitor in the Indian market remains the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan, which currently retails from Rs 46.05 lakh (ex-showroom).
