Anurag Basu’s “Metro… In Dino,” starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Sara Ali Khan, faced a steep drop in its box office collections on its first Monday, struggling to hit the Rs 20 crore milestone.
Monday Blues Hit Box Office Hard
After a promising weekend, “Metro… In Dino” saw a significant decline in its daily earnings on Monday, its fourth day in theaters. The film collected only Rs 2.5 crore, a sharp fall from its Sunday (Day 3) earnings of Rs 7.25 crore. This Monday figure was even lower than its opening day collection of Rs 3.5 crore.
The musical anthology had shown some growth over its opening weekend, making Rs 3.5 crore on Friday and Rs 6 crore on Saturday, before peaking at Rs 7.25 crore on Sunday. However, the Monday dip has raised concerns about its overall performance.
Still Chasing the Rs 20 Crore Mark
According to industry trackers like Sacnilk, the total domestic collection for “Metro… In Dino” currently stands at Rs 19.25 crore. While it has surpassed the lifetime earnings of Sonu Sood’s “Fateh” (Rs 18.87 crore), it’s still trailing behind Kangana Ranaut’s “Emergency,” which collected Rs 20.48 crore earlier this year.
Battling Heavy Competition
The film is facing strong competition from both Bollywood and Hollywood releases. RS Prasanna’s sports comedy “Sitaare Zameen Par,” starring Aamir Khan, which released on June 20, continues to draw audiences. On its 18th day, “Sitaare Zameen Par” earned Rs 1.35 crore.
However, it’s the Hollywood blockbusters that are truly dominating the Indian box office. Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi thriller “Jurassic World Rebirth,” starring Scarlett Johansson, raked in a substantial Rs 4.25 crore on its fourth day. Similarly, Joseph Krasinski’s action thriller “F1,” featuring Brad Pitt, matched “Metro… In Dino’s” Monday collection with Rs 2.5 crore, despite being in theaters for 11 days.
About “Metro… In Dino”
“Metro… In Dino” is a musical romantic anthology exploring the complexities of relationships across four couples. The ensemble cast includes Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, and Neena Gupta. The film is produced by Anurag Basu Productions and Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series.
A Lighter Take on Relationships
Director Anurag Basu shared that this new film is a lighter take compared to its predecessor, “Life… in a Metro” (2007). He explained that the stories naturally gravitated towards a more lighthearted tone during the writing process.
Konkona Sen Sharma, the only returning cast member from the original “Life… in a Metro,” expressed her heartbreak over the absence of the late Irrfan Khan. She noted that while she didn’t know who else would be in the new film, she knew Irrfan wouldn’t be, which was a tough realization.
- “Metro… In Dino” saw a significant drop to Rs 2.5 crore on its first Monday.
