Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming e Vitara electric SUV will feature a compact front e-axle, developed and made right here in India.
Driving Forward with Local Innovation
The e-axle is a smart piece of technology that integrates the motor, inverter, and transaxle into a single, compact unit. This design is similar to advanced systems found in global EVs from brands like Tesla, BMW, and Hyundai.
This innovative component comes from BluE Nexus, a consortium involving industry giants Toyota, Aisin, and DENSO. Their collaboration brings cutting-edge electric powertrain technology to the Indian market, tailor-made for Maruti Suzuki’s new electric SUV.
Powering the e Vitara
The India-made front e-axle for the e Vitara is set to deliver a robust power output. It can range between 106kW (144hp) and 128kW (174hp), offering plenty of punch for daily commutes and more.
Initially, the India-spec e Vitara will be available as a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) model. While there’s also a more powerful rear e-axle capable of 80kW (108hp), offering All-Wheel Drive (AWD), this variant is expected to arrive later. Rumour has it that Toyota’s version of the SUV, the Urban Cruiser EV, might be the first to feature the AWD option.
Clever Design for Maximum Efficiency
The e-axle’s compact dimensions are no accident. It uses advanced engineering, including double-sided cooling for the inverter, which boosts its effectiveness. More efficient magnets also play a role, making the electric motor lighter and smaller.
A key design feature is the placement of the inverter directly inside the main housing. This eliminates the need for separate housings, saving weight and space. It also allows for shorter, lighter shafts to transmit power from the motor to the axle, contributing further to overall efficiency and reduced weight.
Battery and Range Expectations
When it launches, the Maruti e Vitara is expected to come with a substantial 61kWh battery pack. This battery size is projected to offer an impressive ARAI-certified range of approximately 500 kilometers on a single charge, making it well-suited for long-distance travel and everyday use.
