Portuguese tennis star Nuno Borges was denied permission to wear a football jersey in tribute to deceased footballer Diogo Jota at Wimbledon, instead opting for a black ribbon.

A Tribute Request Denied

Nuno Borges, Portugal’s top-ranked tennis player, sought to honor Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, who had tragically passed away in a road accident. Borges had planned to wear a football jersey onto the court during his third-round match.

However, officials at Wimbledon turned down his request. The tournament is widely known for its stringent all-white dress code, a tradition that has been upheld for over 148 years.

Wimbledon’s Strict Dress Code

Borges revealed that his team had actively pushed for a more visible tribute. They even attempted to find a white version of the football shirt to better align with the tournament’s specific attire rules, but this option was also rejected.

“I know Wimbledon is usually not very flexible with attire,” Borges commented. He acknowledged the tournament’s unique policies, which often set it apart from other major tennis events.

A Compromise Gesture

Despite the jersey being disallowed, Wimbledon did permit Borges to wear a black ribbon pinned to his hat. This allowance came as part of a slight relaxation of the dress code following Jota’s death, enabling players to wear black ribbons or armbands as a mark of respect.

“I was told we could still do something to pay our respects for what happened, so I think it was a nice gesture,” Borges stated. He described Jota as a “great footballer” whose passing was a “tragedy.”

United in Mourning

Borges was not the only player to pay tribute. Fellow Portuguese doubles player Francisco Cabral also wore a black ribbon during his matches. Cabral explained his initial attempt to use a black strap, which was denied, before permission for the ribbon was granted.

Cabral emphasized Jota’s profound impact, stating, “He was an inspiration not only for me but for the country in general.” He added that contributing even “one per cent” to help Jota’s family would bring him great satisfaction.
