Veteran actor Rajesh Khanna once publicly lashed out at singers for remixing RD Burman’s iconic songs, urging them to preserve the original compositions.

A Legendary Trio’s Unbreakable Bond

The collaboration between Rajesh Khanna, RD Burman, and Kishore Kumar was legendary in the Indian film industry. This trio created some of Bollywood’s most unforgettable melodies and cinematic moments, built on deep mutual respect and artistic admiration.

Rajesh Khanna, affectionately known as Kaka, held a special reverence for RD Burman, often called Pancham Da. Their professional relationship was more than just work; it was a partnership of passion.

Rajesh Khanna’s Strong Stance

Recently, singer Sudesh Bhosale recounted a striking incident that highlighted Khanna’s fierce protectiveness of Burman’s musical legacy. It happened many years ago at a show in Hyderabad, titled ‘Ye Shaam Mastani’, organized by Balu ji.

Bhosale, the only Mumbai artist invited to sing Kishore Kumar’s songs, shared the stage with chief guests Rajesh Khanna and Gulzar sahab. When Khanna was called up for felicitation, he made a memorable statement. “Don’t alter Pancham’s songs,” Khanna declared emphatically, showcasing his unwavering respect for the original compositions.

The Modern Remix Debate

Sudesh Bhosale further elaborated on the current trend in Bollywood where old songs are frequently remixed. He expressed concern that often, original composers are not given proper credit, or their rights are bought out entirely.

He cited the popular song ‘Aankh Marey’ as an example. When the song was remade, the original composer, Viju Shah, was reportedly told they couldn’t credit him because all rights had been acquired. This practice, Bhosale noted, undermines the creative integrity of the original artists.

Bhosale also recalled an instance at an awards function where a music director received an award for a remixed song, ‘Apni Toh Jaise Taise’, while the original composer, Anandji, was present in the audience, uncredited. He stressed that while inspiration is natural, the creator of the original work must always be recognized.

  • Rajesh Khanna strongly believed in preserving RD Burman’s original music.
  • He publicly urged artists not to alter Pancham Da’s compositions.
  • Modern remix trends often fail to adequately credit original music creators.
  • Giving credit to original composers is crucial for artistic integrity.

Rajesh Khanna’s outspokenness serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of respecting and preserving the artistic heritage left by legendary creators like RD Burman.
