Before becoming the beloved ‘Dhak Dhak’ girl of Bollywood, Madhuri Dixit faced significant struggles, including a series of flops and a surprising marriage proposal that nearly ended her career before it even began.
Early Struggles and Parental Concerns
In the late 1980s, Madhuri Dixit’s initial foray into films was far from successful. Her movies like Abodh and Awara Baap failed to make an impact, leaving her career at a standstill.
Veteran actor Raza Murad recalled that nobody seemed to care about her during this period. Her parents grew so concerned about her future in the film industry that they considered a different path for her entirely.
A Surprising Rejection
With Madhuri’s acting career at rock bottom, her parents decided to arrange her marriage. They approached a prominent playback singer, hoping to find a stable future for their daughter outside of films.
However, the meeting took an unexpected turn. The singer reportedly looked at Madhuri and remarked, “She’s too thin,” ultimately rejecting the marriage proposal.
A Twist of Fate and Subhash Ghai’s Discovery
Fortunately for Madhuri, destiny had other plans. While filming in Kashmir with Rajesh Khanna, a chance encounter changed everything. Her hairdresser happened to meet director Subhash Ghai, who was also shooting nearby.
Upon being introduced to Madhuri, Ghai was immediately captivated by her presence. He asked her to meet him in Mumbai, recognizing her potential. This led to her re-launch with the film Ram Lakhan, a year after she gained some appreciation for her role in Tezaab, effectively saving her career.
Suresh Wadkar’s Hint
Years later, on a singing reality show in 2023, singer Suresh Wadkar seemingly hinted that he was the person who rejected Madhuri Dixit for marriage. When host Aditya Narayan questioned him about a rumor concerning a popular actress’s parents approaching him, Wadkar blushed and looked at his wife.
He responded by saying he was “very content” and glad he found a “Madhuri named Padma” (his wife’s name), which was taken as a clear confirmation by the judges and audience.
