Actor-pop star Diljit Dosanjh has found himself at the center of a major controversy for working with a Pakistani actress, leading to a temporary ban and a promise from a top producer to never cast him again, though he will complete his work on the upcoming film ‘Border 2’.

The Controversy Ignites

The trouble began when Diljit announced his film ‘Sardaar Ji 3’, which features Pakistani actor Hania Aamir. This came after Indian cine bodies implemented a complete ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian films following the Pahalgam terror attack.

While the makers of ‘Sardaar Ji 3’ argued the film was shot before the ban was in place, the decision to release it internationally with a Pakistani artist sparked significant backlash within the Indian film industry.

An Exception for ‘Border 2’

Amidst the swirling controversy, there was speculation that Diljit might be recast in the highly anticipated ‘Border 2’. However, Diljit himself recently shared a video from the film’s set, confirming his continued involvement.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has now confirmed they have lifted the ban on Diljit, but strictly for ‘Border 2’ only. This decision came after the film’s producer, T-Series head Bhushan Kumar, appealed to the federation.

FWICE President BN Tiwari explained that Bhushan Kumar requested the exception because much of Diljit’s scenes for ‘Border 2’ had already been shot, with only a song sequence remaining. Kumar stated he was at a point where removing Diljit would cause significant losses.

Bhushan Kumar’s Stance and Future Implications

Despite the temporary reprieve for ‘Border 2’, Bhushan Kumar has made a firm commitment. He reportedly submitted a letter to the federation, declaring he will “never cast Diljit Dosanjh in future films.”

Ashoke Pandit, President of the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association, emphasized that the “non-cooperation against Diljit continues.” He warned that any other producer who chooses to work with Diljit in the future should be prepared to face substantial losses.

Pandit clarified that the exception for ‘Border 2’ was made considering it does not feature any Pakistani actors and is a film about security forces, aligning with national sentiment.

Unexpected Success and Upcoming Projects

Despite the controversy, ‘Sardaar Ji 3’ saw a significant opening. The film reportedly earned over Rs 18 crore globally in its first three days, achieving the biggest opening for an Indian film in Pakistan, raking in nearly Rs 4 crore there during its debut weekend.

The ongoing non-cooperation could impact Diljit’s other announced projects. He was slated to star in Imtiaz Ali’s next film and was also part of Boney Kapoor’s ‘No Entry 2’ alongside Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor.

  • Diljit Dosanjh faced backlash for starring alongside Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in ‘Sardaar Ji 3’.
  • Indian cine bodies have a ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian films.
  • FWICE lifted the ban *only* for ‘Border 2’ due to significant portions already being filmed.
  • ‘Border 2’ producer Bhushan Kumar has vowed to never cast Diljit Dosanjh in future films.
  • The film industry’s “non-cooperation” against Diljit is expected to continue for future projects.
  • ‘Sardaar Ji 3’ performed well internationally despite the controversy.

This situation highlights the complex challenges and political sensitivities that can impact film productions and careers in the Indian entertainment industry.
