Filmmaker Suneel Darshan recently shared his insights into the late Sunjay Kapur’s marriage with actress Karisma Kapoor, describing it as “an ugly turn” in her life.
A Filmmaker’s Candid Revelation
Suneel Darshan, a veteran filmmaker with long-standing ties to the Kapoor family, recently opened up about Karisma Kapoor’s past marriage to industrialist Sunjay Kapur. His candid remarks came after Kapur’s sudden demise due to a cardiac arrest, an incident that saw Karisma attend the funeral in Delhi alongside her sister Kareena Kapoor and brother-in-law Saif Ali Khan.
Karisma and Sunjay, who were married from 2003 to 2016, share two children, daughter Samaira and son Kiaan. Darshan, claiming deep knowledge of the relationship, shared his perspective, labeling the union as an “abrupt decision” for Karisma.
From Engagement to Unconventional Union
According to Darshan, Karisma’s marriage to Sunjay was quite unexpected, especially following her abrupt breakup with Abhishek Bachchan. He highlighted that Karisma and Sunjay’s sister were close childhood friends, but Karisma and Sunjay themselves were never romantically involved before their marriage.
“We went to Delhi several times, we never saw them as a couple,” Darshan recalled. He felt it was a sudden turn of events, possibly “destined to happen,” but ultimately an “ugly turn in her life.”
The “Trophy Wife” Dilemma
Darshan further elaborated on the challenges Karisma faced in her marriage, particularly the significant culture clash. Having grown up in Mumbai as Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter and achieved fame as a top actress, Karisma desired a more domesticated life after marriage.
However, she found herself in a vastly different environment in Delhi’s high society. “She didn’t want to be playing golf on a Saturday evening. She wanted to spend time at home, with her family,” Darshan explained. He strongly suggested that Karisma became a “trophy wife,” placed in a world that wasn’t authentically hers, leading to fundamental problems within the family dynamic.
A Blended Family’s Perspective
After their divorce in 2016, Sunjay Kapur married Priya Sachdev, with whom he had another child. Priya had previously spoken about their family dynamic, admitting that Sunjay and Karisma’s marriage “was not conventional.”
She emphasized that Sunjay had two beautiful children from his previous marriage, and they all formed “one beautiful blended family.” This perspective sheds light on the complexities and adjustments made by all parties involved in the aftermath of the divorce.
